How do you guys keep record of your mileage?

I have a log book I keep in my car, and then every month I plug all the numbers into a spreadsheet on my computer.

I use the notes app on my cell phone and add them to a spreadsheet later.

We just keep a notebook in our vehicles and write down the date a miles traveled for that job.

How is your business set up?
Do you use the vehicle 100% business use?
If not what percentage?
How many miles do you drive total per year? Both business and personal if applicable.

You have to make sure you only claim mileage that is used for business. If you claim the whole vehicle is for business you better not let anyone catch you driving it anywhere other than to and from jobs or meetings. A business only vehicle is a big red flag to the IRS for a small business.

You are correct. Depending on how he has his business set up he could take standard depretiation and multiply it by the percentage of business use. There are too many variables to consider to automatically say he wants to take standard mileage.

I'm no accountant so don't take anything I say as gospel. I am working on really understanding the tax laws as it pertains to automobiles. There really are so many variables to it.

I use it for both. Today I picked up a mileage log from office max. Now I will only be adding business miles to it. Everything in the lag book will correspond to my customer receipts and planner. Any miles driven for personal use will not be included.

Now my question:

I am a sole proprietor. My home is my business address. I read that you cannot include home to office/work miles. But sense my "office" is at home, then can I include these miles?

Also, I will be making sure I qualify for the home-office deduction. My garage is used exclusively for my business, so I should be able to claim it.

i use any "directions" website to find the distance from my place to the client, and depends how many trips i made ( inspection, detail day , etc ) and i multiply.
as an example : one trip to the client 10 miles , i always log 20 miles as round trip. if i have to go 2times to finish a project , i log 40 miles.

:iagree: I'm a big fan too.

A business only vehicle is a big red flag to the IRS for a small business.

Not if you have a personal vehicle that you drive.

1 vehicle for business and no personal vehicle is a red flag for sure,

That is true, but if you don't make a good amount of money, a businss only car can still make people raise their eyebrows at the IRS.

thank`s guys ,

about taxes and cars... have an "oficial " record in jan and dec every year ( tire change, or oil , or inspection etc) by that you know the total mileage. with mapquest or any direction map u find the round trip mileage to your clients , that you log.
by end of the year you see the % of how much you use the car for business , compared with total mileage.
or if u don`t deduct the mileage , you have to keep the gas reciepts , machanic etc so you deduct that , but you can`t deduct both the gas and the mileage.
