Right now I do not have a DA but plan to get one eventually. For hand work now and DA work later which do you like better for a step after clay Meg151 or BF SRC finishing polish? If the vehicle is so messed up it needs more I will look into Meg105/205 or something but I may not want to ever do anything thats bad enough to need anymore.

I will follow these with either BF GEP or go straight to WDAFPP, 845, or FK1000p which ever I am using on the vehicle. I have the GEP, WDAFPP, and 845 already and plan to get some 1000p to try(not sure if it is any better than what I have already or not). I am just a hobbiest and friend and family guy. Menz powerfinish is in the mix as something to think about. I have FK425, OCW, Aquawax, and two bottles of UWW+ to use also.

Any advice on other products I might want to try and things I have already from above to use together and not to. I know I won't be able to do any correction right now but when I get a DA i would like to have an idea what to get.

D151 is a cleaner/wax, that is it will clean, polish and leave the paint protected in one step.

Blackfire Finishing Polish is a Fine Cut Polish with no protection ingredients, you would have to wax after you use it and it's not going to remove any major defects by hand.

If you want to remove swirls and scratches by hand get some Meguiar's Ultimate Compound.

I think I am going to hold out and wait to compund by machine. Even though I havn't done it yet, I have heard time and time again that by machine is much much much faster.

I don't plan to try and do any correction by hand. I just asked about those items so when I get the DA i will be ready. Now my order of operation is

wash
clay
BF gloss enhancing polish
BFWD
maybe a spray i have as a topper

I will use 845 and 1000p in place of the BFWD sometimes but wondered what, if anything, I should use in place of the BF GEP with these. All by hand right now. And if any of the sprays would work better than the other with any of the LSPs I have.

Yes, I would absolutly put one of the LSPs I mentioned on no matter what I did before.

Then skip the D151 and the BF FP and rub the paint out with the UC and then you can either re-polish with a less aggressive product or go straight to your choice of LSP

If you're going to invest the time and energy into rubbing out a paint system by hand might as well use a product that's going to get the job done.

Take a moment to read through the Man vs Machine article. I cover EVERYTHING in it.

Whoops... replied to your last post before reading this...

If the paint has swirls and scratches, look at using either a medium cut polish or a true compound.

If it only has shallow defects you might be able to tackle them with a fine cut polish, you won't know until you do some testing.

To remove swirls and scratches you need,

  • The right abrasive product for the job
  • The right pad for the job
  • The right tool for the job
  • The right skill and technique to use the above

It's the last one that is the huge variable if you're new to machine polishing but the members here will see you through to success...

I did read that and is the main reason I know I won't do any real correcting by hand. I really won't even try to. I am comfortable with what I am doing right now by hand knowing i won't be able to get out the swirls and such. I did notice when doing my black car the BF gloss enhancing polish did at least fill or hide some minor issues.

All the questions about the compounds are just for future knowledge when I do get a machine and practice on my own daily first. Just seeing what others have had good luck with and if it mattered as far as what I'm using as LSPs.

Thank you for your time Mike I'm sure it is expensive.

Man, it's like you took my thoughts and put them all in a thread of your own haha. I am going to be doing SwirlX by hand whenever I clay a car for customers. I know it'll get out minor scratches and some spider webbing, but it's more to act as the cleaner for the wax with the defect removal as a small bonus. I am right in line with you in that I won't be doing any compounding until I get a DA myself as well.
