If thats just black paint, claybar will do the trick

If you wetsand be extra careful around that lip

If its black paint then you wont need to wetsand it. Its just paint transfer and some buffing or clay should do the trick.

I would absolutely not wetsand that if you have no experience doing that. It's hard to tell from that picture, but if it was a metal grate I'm going to guess that you have a combination of paint transfer, paint removal down to the primer, and paint removal down to the metal.

The lower portion seems to be on the flexible bumper cover, so that won't rust, but the upper portion will. IMO you need to start with a good solventy paint cleaner and get the paint transfer off and see what you have. I'm guessing you are working by hand, I would recommend the Meguiar's Deep Crystal Step 1 if they still make that, if not maybe someone can recommend a Mother's OTC product.

Maybe some of the other members can chime in, the products that I have and would use for that kind of paint transfer are (really old) Meg's #2, DC1, MPPC, and Body Scrub. I know they don't make Body Scrub or MPPC anymore, and #2 has been reformulated a couple of times since I got mine. I guess Poorboy's ProPolish might be good since that's good and solventy.

Im going to take another look at it and see if its scratched. I think its just paint . If I use a paint cleaner will that affect the white paint?

You guys think a claybar will remover the paint from the gate?

Absolutely

I would use a red claybar on that using APC as lube. The APC will eat up your clay, but will speed up the process

A solventy type polish/compound will work to as already stated

No. But maybe Flash runs into more gates than I do, or runs into more people that run into gates.

There is hardly a day that goes by that I'm not removing "garage door paint" or "yellow pole paint" off someones car

:)

stoner's tarminator with a MF towel will reveal whats paint transfer and whats real damage

I find clay never works for me on paint transfers, it may remove some, but not nearly all. House paint usually responds well to paint cleaners with solvent in them, I'm not sure what your gate was painted with. Auto paint is usually a little tougher to remove.

The paint cleaner (for cars) should have no (detrimental) effect on your white paint. You could also try a product like Prepsol/Prep-all which are solvent-based degreasers intended to be used as pre-painting prep on automotive surfaces--that may take your black paint right off.

How To Remove Paint Transfer

Paint Transfer is a term used to describe when the paint off of some other object is transferred onto you car's finish usually by some kind of accident.

My friend Rob is a Fitness Instructor at the gym I work out at and someone, somehow sideswiped his 2006 Ford Mustang GT and in so doing took off is side mirror and transferred some white paint onto his car's finish along with instilling some marring and scratches.

Luckily the damage wasn't worse!

Here's how you can remove paint transfer by hand using a light paint cleaner. For this example I'll use Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion.

Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion non-abrasive, it is designed to safely take off old wax, embedded road grime and pollution that washing will not remove. It prepares the surface for waxing by creating a clean, smooth, highly-reflective surface.

This is a very mild polish and because it's non-abrasive I'm going to apply and work it with a microfiber applicator pad, in this situation were using the nap of the microfiber as our abrasive along with the lubrication and cleaning ability of Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion to gently remove the offending paint.

If you find Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion is not aggressive enough, you can use XMT Heavy Duty Swirl Remover #4 Polishing Compound. This is very aggressive rubbing compound and after using it you will need to follow it with a less aggressive product.

PaintTransfer004.jpg

Place a small amount of Paintwork Cleansing Lotion onto the face of your applicator pad...
PaintTransfer005.jpg

Next work the polish and applicator against the transferred paint putting a little passion behind the pad but don't push too hard or you could instill fingermarks just from the concentrated pressure from your fingertips...

PaintTransfer006.jpg

After working the product for about a minute, stop and inspect to check your progress.. You can see most of the paint transfer has been removed but not 100% of it. Sometimes you many need to repeat the process a few times to completely remove the paint transfer.

PaintTransfer008.jpg

After you've successfully removed the paint transfer you can apply a protective coat of wax or paint sealant or like I've done here, machine polished the paint and then machine waxed the paint.

Looks as good as new and now Rob's going to have the mirror replaced.
