Wetsanding advice needed

Hello everybody.

I'd like to have some advice regarding wetsanding uneven paint. Worse that orange peel. Some sort of paint clotting.

Don't have a ptg. Here are some pics.

This is on a Toyota Vitz.

My buddy has a Honda Civic with these types of defects on a panel that had been resprayed some 3 years back. He's got quite some orange peel too. He wants to remove them and get a flat surface on his car.


Do I wetsand the paint bulges, (don't know the exact term for those defects.)?

or any other way to flatten the paint? I'm afraid that wetsanding will may just strip the clear and paint on these protuberant areas? :confused:

Do the cars in your country have a rust problem? I think thats painted over rust
 
Run stay away do not do anything unless he signs a waiver releasing you of any liability!

thanks for the reply flash. I doubt no. the red car is wrongly resprayed, been like this for months.

Is the below surface prep a problem?

what did you do hit it with 1000 1500 and 2000 then buff?

You were the 1st to pm me when I started learning on the forums. (TID). ;)

Hi Zaid,

You can wetsand, flatten out and remove the orange peel.

As for the bulges, it's highly likely these are areas of "lifted paint" and under the paint surface is an air gap where the paint has lifted away from the panel.

If you sand too much you'll expose the panel and leave a huge section of exposed panel.

My advice is to have your friend/customer learn to live with these defects or consider removing the paint down to the panel, correctly preparing the surface for paint and then repainting the panel or the car.

I'll agree with Mike. Sanding and buffing that area will likely end with bad results.

I went with the least agressive i had. 2000 until flat!

Only compounded: Menz pG (old one), LC wool, makita

thnks God came out nice
 
Did you wetland it by hand? It came out great by the way!

actually the red vitz is not my concern. it's sold. a buddy contacted me to detail his Silver Honda Civic. He's got a panel that has been resprayed n got similar paint bubbles as the red one.

It's difficult to capture the defects on this color. got only one pic of it. bubbles not visible but they are there.

Anyway thanks for your thoughts.

Your thoughts and advice much appreciated, actually more than that Mike. I started wetsanding after reading your post on it and that of KC's.

I did only one section on the car. we had planned a 3-day camping at the seaside. and when back, the car was sold within days.

This is the Vitz i did before (on previous pic the reflection). these two were taken at the seaside.

This looks like poor body work to me:

Looks like bondo that had air bubles in it that were exposed during sanding, but never filled with a glaze before primer/paint. I'm not sure there's enough paint there to fix that.
