I'll update this as I make progress.

Eddie's Mazda RX-4 Wagon

This is Eddie's wagon. It's rare. It's old school...and it has 18,000 miles. It also has RIDS, nasty oxidation, etching, and everything else imaginable. I won't be able to get it perfect, but it'll at least be shiny again. This is what I'm working with:

Here's a couple 50/50 teasers to hold you over until tomorrow, I did 25% of the hood.

Thanks. I have an unhealthy love for wagons and japanese classics, so I've been looking forward to working on this car. It's the only RX-4 I've seen in person.

Went with M105 + M205, and we'll be using Opti-coat when I'm done.

She's looking great! I had a 87 RX-7 for years that I loved!! Still hoping to get a 3rd generation RX-7 some day. That's one cool wagon.

Sweet repair! Looking forward to it.

Sweet, nice retro wagon. That paint looks terrible, but if you can get the same results you got on that small section of the hood on the entire car its going to look great!

Love these old pre-clear coat cars... that's real paint you're working on... enjoy it...

As for this comment...

Years ago I wrote an article just for this type of car...

"Taking your car's paint to it's maximum potential"

Don't know if you took a hood shot "before" you did any polishing work but this article talks about this topic...

The power in the after shots is created in the before shots

Cool project and it looks like you know what you're doing...

Good eye, Mike! Eddie just bought that Datsun 610 and drove it back from halfway across the country. It needs body work and a respray, otherwise I'd be all over polishing it. It'll be for sale after we take care of the dents and get it in primer.

After a bit more work on the RX-4's hood, we've decided to respray the hood, roof, and hatch. It's actually base+clear (I know, I was surprised too!) and the clear on those panels is on death's door. The rest of the car is good to go. I took care of the passenger side today, it's turning out pretty sweet.

Another batch of photos soon...just have to convert the RAW files and resize them.

Ewwwwww.

Orange peel...but you know what? I'm ok with that. For now.

When I'm done with this RX-4 I'm going to do the trunk of that oxidized Datsun 610 for fun. :D

Day three... had some breakfast, finished up with M105 on the sides, and we took care of all the parts that needed work by hand. The roof and hood will be done tomorrow. Then M205, M205, M205, M205, alcohol wipe, inspect, opti-coat.

A before pic for reference:

Passenger side is after M105 + 205, driver side is after M105 only.

Great thread. I'm bored of seeing all high end sports cars. thank you.

Did some more research, and in the 70s some manufacturers would do their metallic paint jobs by spraying the color, then lacquer with the flake in it on top of that. The flake was usually aluminum, which would explain why my pads are coming up black.

Also, change of plans...hood and roof will be done. Worst thing that could happen is that it'll be a copper/gold two tone, which would look a lot better than if we sprayed it black.
