How much to charge

dont cheat your self, on a interior and light exterior like that one $450 to $650 is what i charge and thats compound with wool pad on rotory then foam black pad then makita 6040 with same pad again all compound then wash it take off and clean wheels dress it then wax so its not really to much outside work..

i charge 650+ allday here and just did a sequioa bumped him to 850 and painted one door and an armada 650 flat rate car was a repaint so we color sanded it lightly in some areas these were both wholesale dealer cars..

retail i had a lil coupe come in with some scratches on the front painted the bumper and detail $1850..

retail 350z came in simple wash vac and headlight restoration and carbon fibered the door bezels $250

these are just some examples, ive done cheap as well in the past and it never paid off for me or the customer.

confidence is the key...

There is a guy at work that want me to detail his toyota Rav 4. I am curious how you guys determine what to charge. The car is DIRTY. He washed it 2x in five years.

Interior clean
Clay
Exterior AIO
wax

It's a one time deal. I have all the tools and products to complete the job. I have both Flex. DG 501, D151, Optimun GPS, XMT 360, 105, 205.......... and many more products. I'm doing this to gain more experience but also i'm kinda enjoy the process of bringing something ugly to something beautiful :) So far i spend 5 hours just on interior alone. I still gotta wash the car, 1 step AIO, clear up the headlight lens...I told him i'd give him his car Friday. I usually work on the vehicle a couple of hours in the am and a couple more in the afternoon before i go to work. anyway, i am thinking $100

I do understand the gain experience part.
However, if the guy basically has no previous history of keeping the vehicle clean, then where is your incentive to do a bang up job? Not that he is likely to become a scheduled maintenance customer, which is what you should be striving for.

All far as price goes, you should not be concerned with undercharging this coworker at this time. Learn and let live.

Exactly. If he is willing to pay, don't overcharged him but at the same time, don't cheat yourself. That way, next time you won't he doing it again for only 100. Im setting myself at 180 for coupes on compound, polish, and wax. Even at that price, that's like only 10/hour after electricity, water, and other materials. I don't think a lot of people really know how Mich time really goes into detailing a car. I'm doing 180 bc I'm not looking to do a lot. Just one, maybe two cars a week just for spending money. However, a lot of people think I'm over charging bc people are doing a "detail" for only 100.

I say that DETAILING is a THOROUGH CLEANING of VECHILE & PAINT CORRECTION IS IMPROVING DEFECTS IN PAINT
TWO DIFFERENT TYPE of WORK
DEFECT CORRECTION MEANS USE OF MACHINE SUCH AS BUFFER/POLISHER
So all in all $100 for a THOROUGH CLEANING is NOT BAD
PAINT CORRECTION SHOULD START AROUND $35.00 an HOUR & UPWARDS just my opinion

The quandry is that somewhere along the way, a price range had to have been discussed hand. Long before the vehicle ever showed up in your drive. If you are thinking $100, then how much is the customer thinking?

Why a one time deal? Are you doing a pre-sale clean up?

oh REALLY is THAT HOW YOU FEEL?

Cleaning is really good vac and wipe down, maybe clean up the dash/doors with some APC and some air fresh. Detailing is doing carpets and stains and complete cleaning of everything.

With cars like that, I would just clean it up. He obviously doesn't really care about his car since he has only washed it 2 times in 5 years. Its all about what the customer wants and is willing to pay for.

Yes OP, you may get some great experience, but WOW you learned how to clean up someones mess! And you made less than minimum wage!

What does the outside look like? Any pics? How much is your supply cost? Your going to be using a lot of APC, Clay, Lube, TIME, wax, pads, water, electricity (yes this does add up after a while, my home elec bill has gone up when I've done jobs at my house), brushes, wear and tear on your FLEX, all the stuff you had to put your money up to buy...I'm all about hooking a friend up but I gotta make money. My time is valuable. I'd rather spend it with my daughter and wife then cleaning up someone elses mess and not being paid for it.

I totally agree...although i dont have a wife or any kids. I would rather spend that time to myself (fishing, jogging, hiking, etc) then work for little to nothing. Even a day at Mcdonalds would be more after considering cost involved.

lol I'm referring to the way you type, I'm sorry but I just can't take a post like that seriously, we're all adults here you don't need to abuse caps lock like that

OR ARE WE?....

Well, it's not really a one time deal and no pre-sale either. It's just that his sister is coming to town and he want his car to look decent. I'm sure he'll want me to keep the maintnance schedule on this vehicle.

This is not a business for me. It's just that i have a lot of product and equipment to get a job done and i do enjoy doing it. Some $ is nice too. It's funny how my niece came home from school today and told me that the car looks nice. I asked "how much do you think i should charge?" She said "$200-250)

She's 13 and knows nothing about detailing and that's what she told me.

It's not just a thorough cleaning. I've some correction to do also. Here is a tease picture. It's not 100% done yet.

You're right. I am sure he'll pay me whatever i asked. I hope he'll keep it nice or maybe i can tell him i'll do a schedule maintanence for him.

The outside is in similar shape. Here is a picture.

It's not pollen. It's dirt that etch in the paint

IMO: This is the desired avenue leading to detail for profit. Now you have knowledge in the process of detailing a neglected vehicle. You have also gained the ability to judge times per issue and gained some clarity in price structuring.

Next thing you know you'll be searching the threads for the best steamer, extractor, rotary, and so forth.
Keep up the good work...see you on the forums hand...

I was looking at the steamer, extractor :)

So i gave the vehicle back to my co-worker today. He's extremely happy w/ the result. He gave me $150. I think it's fair. I put in total of 14 hours. Wash, clay, D151, Collinite 845, PERL dressing, carpet clean, vacuum...Oh and engine clean and dressing.

Here are some pictures of the result

I did not plan on doing the engine. I purposefully did not pop the hood for the last two days. However, when i was finishing up some little touch up, i pulled out some dried leave near the wiper blade area. I told myself that "hey, maybe just vacuum the leaves and that's it.

This is what i found
