By far the best protection for a boat?!?!?

Hey guys,

I was talking to a reg client of mine that wants his boat polished up soon..... it is gel-coat. What is the absolute best protection that can withstand the abuse of the water?!?!? I know some impressive sealants and coatings, but gel-coat effective? Also, is there anything that fills the micro holes in gel-coat, or are they so small that a coating or sealant will not fill only cover? OR does compounding effectively smooth the gel-coat removing the micro dimples and then a seal can be applied? Alot of questions I know but I would love to really take care of this client (he is an awesome client :dblthumb2:). Thanks in advance AGians.

I use Collinite 845. But if the gel coat is dull chalky it needs polishing or it will just absorb it. I polished a boat about 8 months ago and I need to change my plan of attack. I plan to use either Megs D151, UNO or Meg's Oxidation Remover from the Marine Line. But I need more practice, the boat wasn't bad, but I need to learn how to polish gel coat better.

Yeah, Ive polished MILES of gel-coat its seems over the last 2 years lol..... Ive got the process down fine, Im more curious as to what would be the absolute best protection for a boat. Ive brought back plenty of RVs only they don't have water beating down on their surface. This client was curious about what would last the longest protection wise and I told him I would ask the experts at AG :dblthumb2:

Actually yes. the hull was still beading today when we washed it. Thats 8 months!
 
Collinite makes a max for boats, Fiberglass Boat Wax 925. While working at my local state park concession for 5 years we used the following. I also know many marines used it also. You can pick any of these up at a West Marine (if you have one near you or online)

-COLLINITE Heavy Duty Paste Fleetwax 885 (this was our go to)

-STAR BRITE Premium Marine Polish With PTEF


The Chain O' Lakes as they are called are many lakes connected together with housing and business surronding them and pollution can get extreme in some parts - these wax held up very well through out our season.

Normally applied twice during the season, April when we opened and then right before the busy July 4th weekend and would last until closing in October.

Great info man, thanx - so any main marina should carry these products?!?!?!
 
Wouldn't Duragloss 501 fit the bill perfectly, being specifically made for RV's and marine boats? I use both DG501 and Collinite 845 on my vehicles and both are inexpensive and extremely durable.

All the marines up here do, but we normally bought them at the West Marine store right in town or you can buy if from their site West Marine. com

Sounds good for sure - I always use my distributors products with great success , only this time around Im looking for the absolute best protection. You feel these are the best?

DG 501 mixed with 601 (4:1) topped immediately afterward with Colli.
 
I use the Col #925 over 3m 0910 cleaner wax and have seen about 8-9 months. Nick actually recommended it to me which was funny because that is what I already used lol. I usually do 2 coats of the 925.

As with anything, prep is super important and IMO especailly with gel coat.
 
So are you guys working the collinite into the gel coat - or basically applying a single pass, allowing to haze, then wiping off? Excuse my ignorance, never used collinite products before :/

Thin to win on Collinite products. Spread it with your DA for faster results, let haze then remove.
 
Are CQuartz or Opti Coat not an option?!?! Curious if the would uphold the 2 year mark and if they are any good on gelcoat? 8 months and kicking is pretty good IMO for Collinite, but would these coatings offer more?

Great turnaround I think - EXHAUSTING 5 Steps!!! But never tried the opti coat on it..... come to find out the client only wanted it shined up for Daytona 500 - otherwise he cared less about the RV lol! Still put nearly 80 man hours into it :/
