I replied to a thread earlier today that someone else started and thought I had checked it before I posted. I now read it and find out I misspelled a word. I checked FAQ's and could not find an answer. How can I edit a post to correct spelling of a word? TIA

You cannot edit after a certain amount of time from original post (5 minutes)

If all you did was misspell something I wouldn't worry about it. I do it all the time...probally did it again just now responding to your thread

In Flash's case, the mods will edit it for him. Little jab of love my friend!

Thanks. I wonder if someone can explain why the edit button is taken up after a few minutes. On other forums I belong to, it is there all the time to correct spelling errors or maybe you left something out you wished you had added. It just makes it more user friendly. I'm sure the mods have a reasonable explanation. Great forum, BTW.

I always wonderered about that. On occassion, I could randomly edit and sometimes I could not. That right there explains everything.

I fixed it for you.

And how good are you!! :dblthumb2:

To be honest, I've had to seek assistance more times that I'd like to admit because I rush through a response rather than take my time and reread thoroughly everything I've just written....

It can get quite confusing if you can keep changing your post.

I would like to see the edit period extended for 10 min or so. It is very short now and cannot fix simple mistakes.

I believe the current edit window is 20 minutes. I believe if you edit within the first five minutes, you can make your edit without the post being annotated; after that it forces an "edit" annotation to the post.

Great forum, BTW.

It's primarily for trouble makers that will start trouble or say something in a post and then after the trouble hits the fan go back and edit their post to make themselves look innocent.

I'm not a Moderator on this forum but I was the Admin for MeguiarsOnline.com and ran it from 2004 when I brought it up from scratch to 2009 when I left Meguiar's to join Autogeek.net and I had the same edit time restriction on that forum for the same reasons.

It's sad that there's always a handful of people that have to cause the majority of all the problems.

I post a lot and while I'm good at spelling I still make mistakes. Most browsers have a spell check feature and it's a good idea to use it before hitting the [Submit Reply] button.

If you're using Internet Explorer, which is what I use because it offers the most ability to take advantage of the features found in vBulletin, (which I also use), you can download ieSpell a free spell checker for Internet Explorer.

bumping this because i'm admin on a honda forum that has half a million members and about three million threads. the issues we face and the vast amount of troublemaking personalities are incredible, but editing issues are never a problem. whereas here, many times i want to add info to a post and realize i can't, which is very annoying and unncessarily bumps the thread if i want to add something. it can also create confusion when posters respond to a post even though down the line it was corrected in another post by the OP or something to that effect.

in vB, as staff, you can observe/compare post edits vs. the original post, so if problems arise it's easy for staff to fix it.

my thoughts are the benefit of having extended edit times outweigh the slim problem of users abusing such edit privileges. it makes life on a forum much easier and streamlined.
