was at pepboys and stumbled upon this, IIRC it was around $3-$4 but rang up as $1.90. I may go back and get the other one. I was looking for a foam pad reconditioning brush initially for trade, but this one looks to fit the bill perfect and it's handy in size...

I've been looking for a light that can help me with my paint correction... From what I understand it's more about color than it is lumens? Or am I off here? The official brinkmann swirlfinder is in the 100's lumens, and this one has 320. Will this work for me? Thanks guys, loving this thread.

Was at Advanced Auto yesterday and saw Meguiars Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere for 4.75 a bottle. Cheap considering reg price is 14.99. Bunch on the clearance rack.

Has anyone looked into the DIY sun gun? There is a thread on it in here somewhere, but right now for 20 bucks you can get an ULTRASTEEL 12V drill. I picked one up. Now to order the correct light/lense and wireing. (exact same bulb as the 3M Sun gun) total cost, around 35 bucks.

$20.00 is about the rock bottom you can find a 12V drill so I think that counts as a Incredibly Cheap Find. I may get one for use around the house also.

Dont remember if I mentioned it, but at a wall mart on my way home,(the bigger one with more stuff) they have Surff City seal and glaze on sale for 6.50 and 6.75 on the close out shelf. I looked up the kit and normally its 40 bucks! (at least on the site I saw it being sold on) Just picked up another seal and 2 glazes. I think I am the only one buying it as there is a nice dust cover on all of them, :) FINE W/ ME :)

As a matter of fact, my Avatar Pic is when I first bought and cleaned my car. It was Waxed with their wax and Glaze as well.

Is the surf city stuff any good?

I used the glaze one my bike for a test,, I like it,, the sealer I have not used but it looks like it would be good. I have mentioned b4 that I would bet money its made in the same place that makes MEGS stuff.. bottles are exactly the same and diff label. Even though I have used HD SPEED on my FIL's Truck, b4 it goes back to him, im going to just glaze it for some super slick topping.

There's a Porter cable starter kit and a lexol kit on lightning deal for the next 2 hours.

$170 for 7424xp, 5 pads, backing pad, and a few goodies.

Edit: $180 here. I'm sure you could actually get this cheaper here with a code. Never mind.

I've wondered this about a lot of detailing products! They're all made overseas, so who's to say some of them aren't coming from the same factory? There are a lot of microfiber products I'll see from big names selling for pretty high prices. Then I'll see an off-brand that has an identical looking towel (with same specs as well) selling for far cheaper. Sometimes they even use the same stock photo! I've examined a few of them, and you can tell one company has changed the coloring or maybe shopped in some other products, but both towels will have the exact same folds/wrinkles, seams identically aligned... I've seen the same kind of thing with brushes and some other tools. They have to be the same, but so far I've been too scared to risk my paint by getting the cheaper one.
Feed back please

Hey BlueBeast
I will purchase the cheaper micro-fiber towels sometimes if they feel OK and stock up on a pack or two so I can use them for applying spray wax in the door jams and such so if they get ripped, tore or even greese on them I'll just thow away. I keep them seperated in different draws/containers from my good micro-fiber towels and will wash seperatly.

And I too will look up and down isle's in stores (big lots/dollar tree's or ?) for different things I might be able to use for something for detailing, like different brushes(you never can have enough) for engine compartment or fender wells.

Years ago our big lotts around here had a bunch of the meguiars brushes and I must have bought $150.00-$200.00 worth over a couple week period at the different locations. Had a pic of all of them on my garage floor , must have had 30 or more. Finally sent some to my buddies. Still have 1 of each hanging on my wall.

I've often wondered the same thing about lots of products. Can't prove anything, but, I firmly believe lots of this stuff is just re-badged. Sorry I'm so cynical but life has taught me to be that way.

Some of that is very true. I use to work at a hardware store, and we sold "Store brand" christmas lights, and "GE brand" christmas lights. They were both GE. Same lights from china, same box, just different logos. The back of the 'store brand' even had a GE logo and said "Made by General Electric". It EVEN had the exact same model number on each respective model. But the "store brand" was $1 cheaper (regardless of size or type, they were all $1 cheaper). Some demanded the GE brand, even as I (and even the owner of the store) told them the store brand was the same (he actually made more profit on the cheaper store brand- go figure, but kept the GE on the shelf as some demanded it).

One thing to watch out for though, is sometimes the off brands are A) knock offs, they are built in China using certain standards, the factory rips off the design and uses cheaper materials and less-tight tolerances to sell a knock off. B) stuff that didn't pass the name brands QC. It's not uncommon for a big batch of product to 'fail' quality control (something as simple as an incorrect color on the plastic, to as major as a high failure rate during QC testing), and then have a knock-off brand label slapped on it to sell the already produced product but not tarnish the brands image (Begs the question, is buying a product a person refuses to put their name on wise?). Finally, some of these companies do in fact make two seemingly identical products under different brands, but use cheaper materials and looser tolerances (making them less accurate/reliable/high quality). So it's a trick of figuring out whether you had an identical product that rolled off the line and went into one of two boxes, or you have a cheap knockoff or even something that failed quality control.

It's kind of like some cars. Take the VW Toureg and the Porsche Cayenne. Same platform. They share a LOT of the same parts. However Porsche uses higher quality materials throughout the vehicle, and includes features and amenities not available in the Toureg. Although, technically, at the bare bones they are the same SUV. So while you could say your Toureg is "basically a Porsche", it's not QUITE the same as the workmanship and quality of materials does differ (as does the price tag- by a lot!)
