I credit the world famous Mike Phillips with the first internet write up on detailing a vehicle. I quickly followed him and I'll brag about being second (best I can tell).

Write ups have been a great source of information on processes, equipment and products.

Write ups have lost their prestige. A well written write up doesn't attract the attention it used to.

I think it is for a number of reasons. One reason being everything has been covered over and over again. Another is the excessive posting of every single little thing done in the detailing process. A picture of someone using a little brush to clean a name plate...really??? Now post 10 pictures from different angles of you and your little brush cleaning the name plate and other nooks and crannies -AAUUGGH!

The write up is just about burned out.

Some of my best write ups back in 2004 were no more than 5 pics. Well it is time to go OLD SCHOOL!!

Sounds like (in the section I bolded) you're talking about that guy in the (detailing) uniform, Joe. IMO the point at which the write-up jumped the shark was when detailers like him, and many others, started doing their write-ups not for the other detailers on the forum, but for their customers.

These write-ups are purely for advertising purposes and sometimes don't even include the products or processes used, and then all the other detailers who play this game jump in with an attaboy. Questions or constructive criticism are frowned on or even aggressively attacked, because the purpose is to show high-end car owners, who are directed from other forums (rich-guy car owner forums which these detailers troll), what a great detailer you are, see, all these other great detailers say so.

It's funny how many forum members don't see this practice for what it is, but they get sucked in by "famous" detailers, etc. who manipulate detailing forums for their own purposes.

Thanks for pointing this out Joe, it's been bugging me for a long time--and flawless finish on that fender!

Hey Joe,

Could you go into detail starting with the car arriving and then outline each and every step you did, which pads, product and tools you used and the amount of time for each step.

And if it's not too time consuming, post a before and after pictures for each step to each panel.

Thanks Joe!

Simple yet complete!! :props:

Short and Sweet! :dblthumb2:

Joe, I would also like a full report of the weather at the time of the correction. Relative humidity, ambient air temps and density altitude. Also, the denominations of the bills would be helpful. Of course pictures of the above would help me tremendously.

Don't forget the picture of you smoking a cigar after the car is done.

Paint thickness before and after would be helpful as well.

Who cares if someone wants to take a picture of every step in their process? Who cares if it's just for advertising? If the results are there, what is the problem? I am much more annoyed by someone bragging about how much money they make (especially someone supposedly so humble...) than someone taking ten pictures of wax hazing.

If you don't like reading long write ups, then don't. But don't get on here and start trying to make others feel bad for wanting to document their work, or worse yet to grow their business...

The other thing that kills me is that, even though my write ups are for advertising, I outline what products I use and what pads I use. I also answer every question asked in my thread. I also answer the 20-30 pm's I get PER WEEK about what polish someone should try, or if someone in the area can come hang out and learn some techniques from me. So don't be so quick to judge people based on their write ups. There may be more to it.

Flannigan, you obviously don't know Joe very well, he's got a wicked sense of humor, and I don't know how old you are, but he may have been doing this for a living since you were in diapers or before.

Once upon a time these forums were for detailers, not for the customers. You really are pretty cynical, considering you've stated you're not even an AG customer.

I know enough about someone who will brag about how much money they make on a job seconds after complain about how other detailers do things.

And you're right, I don't buy anything from AG, last time I checked you didn't have to be an AG customer to use this forum, just like you don't have to be a Detailers Domain customer to use their forums. For the record I don't buyfrom AG because they don't offer a wholesale discount for businesses, and other companies do. Why would i spend more money for the same products that I can get MUCH cheaper somewhere else?

Did Joe say how much money he made? That's a random pic of some Benjamins...not what he got for the job. IT WAS A JOKE.

It doesn't matter if that was a pic of his money or not. It is the fact that he is trying to put others down for no reason other than he doesn't like reading long write ups.

It's a joke! If anybody was trying to put people down it was me, not Joe.

I see, I guess this falls under the category of "everyone else is doing it". Just because everyone is doing it doesn't make it right.

And for the record, AG DOES have a wholesale program, it just has a minimum buy-in amount to open your account.

When I called to specifically ask, they didn't. So something must have changed. And your "everyone else is doing it" comment doesn't make any sense. Show me where there is a rule stating you have to be a customer to use this forum? Show me where there is even something written to the effect of that....you won't fine it, because it doesn't exist. You've made up that thought on your own for some odd reason.
