Sign-up: 1965 Mustang GT - Wetsanding for a Show Car Finish

Live Broadcast starts at 6:00pm

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

I just showed a guy named John that heard we had a new way of removing swirls the 3" Griot's Garage Polisher as a sander for his 1965 Mustang GT because you can see where the body shop hand sanded close to the edge and,

  • Left their sanding marks
  • Left their tracers
  • Left their swirls
The key to a scratch-free and swirl free finish when sanding starts with the sanding and having a 3" foam backed disc for the finish sanding cannot be beat.

We'll see the Mustang here in the future. John is coming back to see our new way of removing swirls tomorrow night for the Thursday Night Live Broadcast.

The color is Viper Red and overall whoever did the body work and paint did an exceptional job. The paint has swirls left by a rotary buffer. And there are, tracers, arc scratches and just flat out dull sections next to edges where the sanding marks have not all been removed. So close, but no cigar...

I'm alway posting that a swirl-free finish can be created using only a rotary buffer but not everyone can do it. I find more examples of cars with swirls from rotary buffers than I do examples of cars without them.

This class is limited to the first 6 people that sign-up.

Re: Close, but no Cigar... 1965 Mustang GT

Is that a small dent just in front of you finger?

I hope not, after all that painting work. After the car is polished out that would be the only thing I would be able to see.

That is just about my favorite 60's Mustang body style.

***Update***

Upcoming Live Broadcast

The owner Jon and I discussed his car this last Sunday at the King Neptune's Car Show, specifically about how much clear was sprayed over the car and Jon thinks there's enough to re-sand it and then buff it out. At this time we're only planning on dampsanding the horizontal panels or the gloss panels as these are the most important panels as they are the most viewed panels.

This will be a live broadcast on either Thursday January 3rd or the 10th...

I've put you're name on the list.

I've invited our 3M Rep Dennis Povio to be my guest for this project, if he can make it I'll let him share all that he can about the 3M System. The sanding and compounding for the horizontal surfaces will be restricted to Dennis, (if he can make it), and myself as this is a tick on the advanced side...

We will need a team of people machine polishing the vertical panels to perfection so at the end of this project we have a completed "look" to help Jon when he displays his Mustang at the car show the next weekend.

Sounds good. I never really sanded before, hopefully it won't be that bad. Thanks for adding me and looking forward to coming down.

***Update***

Dennis Povio cannot make it due to schedule conflicts but he did say he's on board for a future wetsanding project here at Autogeek.

Here's the link to share with your friends to watch while we sand down the horizontal panels of this Mustang and then compound and polish the paint to prepare this car for display at an upcoming car show.
