Most regretted detailing product purchase

The one detailing purchase that I regret the most was ...my first purchase.

That was many years ago. I've learned since then that I actually do have a life outside of car care. Now I enjoy driving them more than making them look pretty. I've saved a hell of a lot of money too. Enough to buy cars instead of breaking my back over them.

  1. It's not very effective compared to many other products
  2. It corrodes aluminum terribly
  3. It's smell makes me nauseous

I'd also add that when used on interior bits it will take the paint off of buttons and other controls...ask me how I know...:(

  1. It's not very effective compared to many other products I use it and I agree it is not as strong as other products at the same dilution ratio
  2. It corrodes aluminum terribly This is somewhat inaccurate these days. The original green-colored formula has this effect on uncoated aluminum and when the product is permitted to dry (Iron-X has a similar effect if left to dry). However, they do have products specifically designed for today. The ones I have seen are orange-colored.
  3. It's smell makes me nauseous It does have a medicinal scent to it. If I ever have a problem with this product I take a whiff of Iron-X and my mind is instantly reprogrammed. :)

I agree on Simple Green, I thought I was saving $$$. It is not very effective. What is a good APC that you guys use?

My other regrets:
Griot`s Best of Show Wax
Griot`s Machine Polishes
CG Ferret Wheel Brush - has a nice metal rounded tip with no rubber cover. And it has not lasted at all.

For the most part, I agree with Simple Green, but it does have its place. I recently used it to clean silicone spray off of my Line-X bedliner. That's about as far as I would go with wanting to use that.

Meg's APC+. I couldn't detail without it.

You'd think the guys at Chemical Guys would have realized this. It really boggles my mind that you can have a huge 'car product' company, ...and yet overlook this important detail. Wow.

Daytona wheel brush...I now wear goggles and protective gear. Not to mention how many times I had to retape them.

I use chemical guys All Clean on so many things and it works great. I haven't had any issues with discoloration, and I use it to clean interior panels, wheel wells (used to use it on the wheels until I found a good wheel specific cleaner) and on my engine details. It gets make up and all the built up black junk on the steering wheel off relatively easy. It's the only one I've ever used since I started detailing, so I don't know how it compares to others, but it does everything I expect it to do so I haven't bothered looking at anything else. I use it at their recommended dilution which is 10:1, but they say 20:1 for interiors, but I just use it at 10:1all the time.

I didn't care for their ferret brush as a brush, but it works great as a frame to wrap a microfiber around to wipe inside rims on the final wipedown step

I think one of my worst purchases was getting interior dash tools. I bought two sets and have never used them. I just use cheap paint brushes with All Clean and microfibers and it works a lot better. I also bought two little red caddies from CG and I was pissed that I couldn't even fit a spray bottle in the things, so I don't use them either.

I don't really buy CG things, just got some VRP so we'll see how it holds up. I'll be testing it against CarPro Perl and Optimum Tire Gloss.

Meguiar's is a nice all around, Menzerna, Optimum, CarPro.

I try to not buy from there anymore, but I really like the hexalogic pads. I made a big initial purchase there with chemicals so I haven't had to buy anymore yet

I cleaned the tire with Meg D101 3x and with Amazing Roll Off 3x for a total of 6 times. There was nothing coming off of that rubber-NOTHING. Note that the Tuff Shine Dressing didn't flake off (which is the indicator of improper cleaning) but rather in my case the shine slowly disappeared over the next three weeks.

Amazing roll off leaves a protective wax coating behind. Thats likely what prevented the tuf shine from bonding properly.

Thanks for the tip on that!

Out of curiosity, what have you switched to? I made the switch from Griot`s to Chemical Guys. I absolutely love their products, especially their sealants, waxes, and soap. And I totally agree on their Hexlogic pads.

I do not like those brushes either. Much prefer the mothers brush set, and extra elbow grease. :dblthumb2:

All the Formula 2001, Armor All, and "wet-look" tire shine that I bought in high school. Long live Autogeek!

I've been buying from Autogeek a lot. I was living in Jacksonville, Fl and they are about 3 hours away so shipping was ridiculously fast. I haven't decided where to shop for chemicals now like the dressings and cleaners. I've been mostly going off what my buddy does who is pretty successful in Hawaii, and he started with CG, but hadn't been impressed lately with them and says they are changing formulas or watering down stuff like the staged compounds which used to be thick and creamy and worked well, but now come more runny and don't do so hot. But they have their V line now, which mighthave somethingto do with thelesser quality of their original products. I might stay with them for the general cleaning products and dressings just because they work great for me, but I'm in love with Wolfgang Deepgloss sealant 3.0 which I get from Autogeek, and use M105 and M205 for my polishing needs. Oh and CG ecowash has some wax in it, and most likely the cause for the motors in his BOSS sprayers going bad, so we started getting our ecowash from detail kings, which is a little cheaper for that product
