clay not working

I purchased some Griot's car clay and speed shine for the lubrication. I went to clay the hood of my dads car and nothing came off. There was some dirt on the clay but not a lot. The car has never been clayed before and it has been an outside car for over 7 years. There were also raised brown particles on the hood that weren't removed, but came off with my finger nail.

Did the surface of the paint feel smooth after claying? If so the clay did it's job. But if not try re claying the area or purchasing a more aggressive clay.

you might be expecting too much out of clay, also just because its never been clayed does not mean its going to be filthy, use less lube and try again but understand being inexperienced and even experienced you can start to mar the paint aka a polish would be in order

Clay will not always remove contaminates. If the paint has a smooth feel and your hand slides off the paint easily, then it did its job.

The paint did feel smooth after. I'll have to go get more aggressive clay. I was expecting the clay to be covered in dirt, but I guess it worked.

If the paint felt smooth...
-Then why risk the possibility of even more "marring"...from a 'more aggressive' clay?

But then again...
-I will asume you do plan on performing post-claying:
Polishing-process(es)...before LSP application, anyway.

From the sounds of it the paint may be clean.

I have found the trouble stops on a car it the door panels and fenders (wear the wheels are), usually the hood doesn't get too dirty.

I would not recommend getting more aggressive clay if the bar rides smooth and there is no noise or scraping sound from it. More aggressive clay wont do anything else but mar the paint.

If you really want to get the paint as clean as possible, IronX the car.
