honestly, this was more than a dream come true, Mike Phillips and crew standing in my shop.....I was blown away......

Paint is thin on edges. During the sanding stages it is important to not sand the edges. The same applies for the compounding stage. It would be very easy to burn through the clear coat if the edges were not taped off.

Thank you, much appreciated.

I'm at a total loss for the proper words to express how good this project makes me feel. I can only guess how all of you must feel.

Great job and a big THANK YOU to ALL for doing such a great thing.

Bill

Hi Bill,

Wait till you see the time lapse capture Yancy set the GoPro Camera up to take of this project.

You will literally see this car go from sanded and buffed, start to finish frame by frame...

It's was nice to be able to watch live, cant wait to see the finished project. Mike how often do you teach wet sanding classes?

The Nebraska get together was an amazing time. Mike, Yancy, Bruno, and AG really made the event first class.

The forums have taught me so about detailing but getting to learn first hand from Mike was invaluable. In two days I was able to use the PE-14 and learned how to wet sand.

Ben #1 did an awesome paint job on the car. All of us were in awe of his paint knowledge and expertise.

Wes was a great host over the weekend. A special thanks to him for organizing this event and making it happen.

If another opportunity presents itself I highly recommend other forum members to attend.

I teach the basics of wetsanding by hand and machine at all of my 2-day detailing Bootcamp classes.

In the past I've had "dedicated" classes on this topic and we've used real cars just like you see in this thread.

The best way is to learn is by doing and working on a real full-blown wetsand, cut and buff project like this one. This was a chance in a lifetime because it's pretty rare that the owner of a cool car will let absolute strangers, especially people "learning" to sand and buff work on their special car.

Most classes involve using demo hoods, cookie sheets or rental cars, nothing wrong with these and I have used all of these in the past and will continue to use them into the future.

But the opportunity to wetsand a CUSTOM, high quality paint job on a real car out of Detroit in its glory days, with the body shell on a roll-around dolly and all the other panels removed for a true and professional restoration is about as rare as you can get.

Here's the good news...

I have another car from Detroit in it's glory days that will be here for my next detailing boot camp class but the class is either full or getting full so if you want to work on the real deal then clear your schedule and get signed up.

Mike Phillips's Detailing Boot Camp January, 26th & 27th

The car I have scheduled for wetsanding is a 1963 Impala, you can see it here...

The Blindfolded Detailer Wheels Another Car!

Detailing Boot Camp Demo Car
This will be one of the cars my students will get to work on at my next detailing boot camp class the weekend of January 26th and 27th.

Click here to sign-up for my next class...

Their lesson will be to take what they learn in the class and put it to work on this swirled-out mess...

I also have a LIVE BROADCAST coming up the first week of next year where we're going to dampsand a 1965 Mustang. This class is open to a few people that want to watch and help out...

Sign-up: 1965 Mustang GT Dampsand for a show car finish

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

I just showed a guy named John that heard we had a new way of removing swirls the 3" Griot's Garage Polisher as a sander for his 1965 Mustang GT because you can see where the body shop hand sanded close to the edge and,

  • Left their sanding marks
  • Left their tracers
  • Left their swirls
The key to a scratch-free and swirl free finish when sanding starts with the sanding and having a 3" foam backed disc for the finish sanding cannot be beat.

We'll see the Mustang here in the future. John is coming back to see our new way of removing swirls tomorrow night for the Thursday Night Live Broadcast.

We're prepping this car for display at a car show...

Just curious why the tape around the edges ?

Besides the correct answer Ben provided another reason to tape-off raised body lines is so you can see where there at. Let me explain...

When you're sanding, you create a slurry that is made up of the clear paint you abrade off the surface that is suspended in the water you use as a lubricating.

This sanding slurry covers the panel and makes it hard to see exactly where the raised body lines are located without a protective visual indicator like the 3M Blue Vinyl Tape.

Above I used the word EXACTLY because gravity cause paint to move downward off of the high points so you must know where the raised body lines are in order to avoid sanding over them as paint can and will be thinner on a raised body line.

And remember, we hand sanded, machine sanded, compounded and polished the paint on this car and each of these procedures removes paint, sanding and compounding of course remove more paint than polishing but "yes" even polishing removes a little paint.

It was a genuine pleasure meeting you, working with you and getting to know you and your lovely wife Carmin. Thanks for all your hard work and contributions to the success of this project.

Opportunities like this are as rare as Hen's Teeth...

That said, I'm confident there will be more cool projects coming up in the future.

My definition of the word luck...

Luck = preparedness meets opportunity

Hey Guys,
Neat deal! We had a terrific bunch of people all come together to do as Paul put it, "a simple random act of kindness."

Just wanted to say it was great to be a part of the project and hopefully I didn't pass along the flu to anyone. I haven't received any hatemail from anyone yet, so fingers crossed! ;)

Hey I am still here in Nebraska guys the weather is perfect 6 degrees when I stepped outside today! I'll jump on a plane later today for warmer weather and home.

Bruno this trip was a is so much more then just getting to work on a classic car. The effort behind this project are wide spread and for years to come will bring smiles to the faces of all that where and still are working on the car.

I just want to thank Mike and Max for having this project move forward on the Autogeek side. Wes thanks for bringing this project to Mike! I had a great time and this will be a Christmas present that I know will be well received.

To Seth and the Doctor, it was great to meet and work with both of you on this gift, thank you.

Ben #1 and Ben #2 you guys are great and I am honored to have worked and shared some fun with both of you.

Yancy I have video of you buffing on a panel so thanks for going above and beyond on your end of this project. I am looking forward to seeing all the video and behind the scene footage.

What have you up your sleeve.I guess if you can put an LS-6 speed in an AMX then a 390 4-speed (Gear Vendors overdrive?) can go in anything. Volkswagen,Morris Minor, Fiat. Oh I know, It`s a Mazda Miada like the one Stacy David built.LOL.
