Hey there everyone, so I had a question in regards to polishing INSIDE the exhaust tips. A lot of german cars that I see have a huge build-up of grime/carbon in their exhaust and I was wondering what the best way to clean it was. I was told by a friend that if I use extra fine 0000 steel wool, it scratches the tips, and inside the exhaust?? Is that true...obviously if I used steel wool, it would be with CG Grime Reaper, but I am curious if using steel wool with an APC would scratch the inside of the exhaust tips? What do you guys do?

Wow, thats going the extra mile cleaning the inside. I use 0000 SW and metal polish on the outside and dont have any trouble. You may want to check out some brass wool if your worried.

Ok sounds good, any other suggestions?

Why would you polish inside the exhaust tips? They're just going to get dirty almost immediately.

There was someone who posted a thread the other day showing how they use the daytona speed wheel brush and apc to clean the inside of the tips out, but he didn't polish them.

Because it looks good for the time being.

I know a detailer using a Daytona brush with toothpaste. The interior of exhaust tips are shining like glass.

I can relate.
I first cleaned the inside of the exhaust tips with APC, then polished with Meg 205, then used Collinite Metal Wax (#850).
On my car, the inside of the exhaust tips are more visible than the outside of them.

When I first put the Borla Exhaust on my car. I opti Coated the inside and out of the exhaust. It does make it much easier to chean. P 21S Polishing Soap works great to get the stuff out of the inside of the pipes.

First of all, the first comment part of your comment is not true...but yes I saw that video it was camaro's video, which I really enjoyed, but yes, he didn't manage to polish the inside.

It does, but it also cuts the smell of the build-up in there. But I was just wondering if 0000 steel wool would scratch the inside and outside of the exhaust tips if it is used with some APC?

Brass wool might be less aggressive than steel wool and not scratch or dull the surface. stainless exhaust or chrome plated tips?
Made a mistake on my motorcycle exhaust trying to remove burned shoe sole rubber with 0000 wool a long time ago, never again.

Well I have always first clean them with an APC and a junk MF, then got Mother's metal polish and the Powerball and gone to work.

Works like a charm every time!

I originally cleaned mine with a cone felt attachment on an electric drill and Blue Magic metal polish. Once cleaned, I periodically wipe them out with an old MF cloth, and touch up with the polish as needed.

^^^:dunno:^^^ :D

Because it looks good...

(And it makes them easier to be kept clean!!)

I use a terry cloth for neglected tips and an old mf towel for tips that are maintained well. No need for steel wool ever in my case.

Hahah, Bob you really love adding pictures don't ya

So do you mind explaining why using even ultra fine steel wool would be bad?

Even ultra-fine steel wool, like #0000, will have its steel-strands breaking-off, and finding a place
to embed themselves...(A root cause for rusting to occur)...
As well as supplying loose-steel-material that may indeed scratch metals.

I'd rather use a product like P21S TAW with a soft towel for removing the majority of carbon build-up.
Any remaining contaminates/'carbon-spots' can be removed with a good Tar & Bug Remover...
Followed with a thorough washing to rid the exhaust system of the T&B remover.

Then...An application of a good, yet having 'gentle abrasives', metal polish, using soft towels/pads;
and/or: A drill-motor with a cotton wheel...Does wonders for the majority of my exhaust "tasks".

BTW, ARizzle:

-You haven't stated what type of exhaust/tips these German vehicles have that are so grime-y/carbon-y...

-I've seen some that are:
SS; Chrome; Powdered-coated; Anodized; etc.

This was great advice Bob, thank-you very much! How can you tell the difference between SS, Chrome, Powder-coated, anodized, etc? The example I gave about the german car was my uncle's 2011 Audi s4...I believe his Exhaust tips are Chrome...but I could be wrong!

But thank-you very much Bob!
