Edge2000 Pads Discontinued? Can I use the adapter still?

Hey guys,

I bought a PC dual action a few years ago with the Edge2000 quick connect adapter and starter-kit. That got me through 3 polish & wax jobs.

But now the medium-cut green pad I've used most often has worn out and I'm having trouble finding a replacement. It seems like the line has been discontinued.

I've never used anything aside from this with my DA and I'm a little sad to convert to using a backing plate.

I heard 3M bought the company and that their "Quick Connect" pads are compatible? But at a quick glance, it seems a lot of these are 8" pads which I understand are not designed to be used with a DA?

Any advice?

I believe AG sells the 6" Edge pads.

Well I did look around on the AG store and it seems you are correct, no more Edge pads. They have been rebranded under the 3M name and what not.

8'' pads are really difficult on a DA, I believe 6.5" is the highest you want to go. Now nothing bad will happen if you put a bigger pad on the PC, it will only take you a lot longer and it will be harder to control. Basically think of pad sizes on a buffer as wheel sizes on a car.

If you have a jeep with a 30 inch tire stock, and without any driveline upgrades put a 46 inch tire on it, the car is effectively geared up and does not have the power to properly use that 46 inch tire. It will be very sluggish, but can it be done? Yes.

Now apply this theory to the PC, putting a larger pad on it will "effectively gear up" the motor, and as a buffer, it does not have adequate power to handle the larger pad. Same applies to putting a smaller pad on it.

Now my recommendation is either:

Get a 5.5" pad on a 5" backing plate; very good combination on the PC, very easy to line up.

or

Learn to master a rotary buffer if you really want these pads. They are not as scary as some make them out to be. 99% of rotary inflicted swirls come from pad hop (improperly aligned pad); which clearly these "3M" pads would stop. Paint is burned when either the RPM's are too high and/or you are pressing too hard.

Hope this helps! :)

There was another thread about this...in fact I might have even started it. I think backing plates have improved a lot since 2004-ish when the Edge system seemed like a good alternative. You just don't see as many melted backing plates as you used to.

Yeah, AG is down to just Black and Yellow.

Appreciate the feedback, it confirms several of my thoughts:

1) No US detailing websites seem to carry them. (I actually placed an order yesterday that looked like it would work but they emailed me today to cancel it).

2) The bigger pads are no bueno on the DA.

3) Suck it up and get a backing plate.

All I've ever used is these Edge products. Anybody have any brand advice? I know there's a line of megs pads w/ backplate at the local auto body supply place.

I have a few of each color. Were you just needing a single green?

Well, knowing they're out of style I'd buy a few if I could.

But yeah, a single green has lasted me 3 years so I'd be happy to take it.

I'm inclined to stick w/ Edge if I could just because it's what I know, and I wouldn't have to purchase a backing plate.

I'll PM you my contact info in case you can move forward w/ it -- either way, appreciate the thought.

Honestly a 6 pack of 5.5" Lake Country CCS pads on a 5" backing plate is a good place to start.

I would also take a look at Megs DA MF Correction System, I have never personally used them, but I have heard a lot of great feedback from them and they work well. 5" starter kit includes everything you will need and is cheaper then going the CCS route.

The Megs Foam pads and correction compounds and polishes work well and if they are at a store near you, it is a convenient choice.
