New Daily Driver Restoration - Paint Correction and 22ple Application

Very nice work. Always amazed how some people get black cars, then let them look like that after a short while. Complete turnaround. How'd you like the Opti-Eraser? Thinking about a low-cost clay alternative, but don't really want to spring for the Speedy Prep towels since I only do my family's cars. Seems like some tend to use too much pressure when using things like the Eraser, which lends to marring, while others are happy with them

Great Turn around. Love 50/50 shots
Thanks! Trashed cars yield fantastic 50/50's :xyxthumbs:

Great work man and great photos as usual.:dblthumb2:
^Thanks Chris!

^To be honest - I only picked up the Opti-Eraser because when it is cold out, it makes it hard to work with clay so I wanted to try something that does non need to be constantly molded into a new shape. If given the option - I would just use standard clay every time, however the opti-eraser does seem to pick up a good amount of contaminates. It can mar the surface if you do not clean it VERY VERY often. I'm talking every 30 seconds, dip it in a bucket of water and clean the surface of the eraser. I did not experience any marring on this car, but I definitely have on softer paints. That is why I will only use it when I am planning on a full correction anyway.

Thanks. Figured it would need cleaned a lot with its design. Oh well, still have my clay, which still seems to be the best option for this step, just a little more time consuming than the others

^Yeah, I would not be in any hurry to replace your clay with a new "clay alternative".

Nice clean up.

Oh! I been waiting for this thread!

The car looks beautiful. I used D300 on 5" MF pad with my GG. I would say 70-75% corrected without doing a 2nd step. I hear ya on the water spots. Mine were mostly located on the rear bumper. I think I am going to try foam pads when I correct again probably around Labor Day.

When you get to the miscellaneous parts it's pretty breezy. The engine bay is clean, the wheels clean up great. My 07's look slightly different. I am surprised Mazda stop making dual exhaust tips when they produced the new bodies in 2009.

It is a great black color like you said when cleaned up!

Great work again!

PS: If you ever want top tint the front to match the back it is 20%.

I was originally planning on using D300 + MF pads, but all of my Meg's MF pads have failed on me recently (velcro separating from foam) even though I always use them at the recommended operating speeds. Oh well.

I will get to the rest of the details later this week once the snow melts. Dual exhaust tips are still available, but only on the turbo charged models.

I asked her if she wanted the front's tinted (since I can't live without tint on my cars) and she didn't mind the clear fronts. I may end up having them done anyway just so it looks a bit better to me.

Looks great, Zach!

When you get a chance you should pick up some 6" Megs MF Finishing pads and use them for the cutting step on the LHR21....I promise you will never want to pic up another yellow LC pad again! ;)

Zach very nice correction. FG400 is some impressive stuff.

^Thanks Rasky. I've got some 5.5" MF cutting discs, however both of them failed on me during their first use. I loved using them, but have yet to pick up a replacement set. When I do, I will get both the 6.5" and 5.5"... hopefully the replacements will last a bit longer :/

Do you always use them below 5,000 OPM's as recommended, or can you bump up the speed without ruining the pads? When mine failed, I noticed it while cleaning them afterwards. I used speed 4-4.5 on the PC7424 with Meg's backing plate, so I don't think I did anything wrong on my end.

Zach very nice correction. FG400 is some impressive stuff.
^Thanks! I'm really liking FG400. I rarely pick up my M105 anymore.

Amazing job Zach! Your 50/50 shots are worth a thousand words. The car looks totally different!! In fact, it looks better than new! You revived it to its glory.

Thanks! I told the salesman that I was going to do a full restoration on it when we bought it. I sent him the link to this thread so he could check it out. Hopefully now he understands why I told them not to try to "buff it out" before we picked it up.... I think he thought I was a little nuts when I asked them not to touch it or even wash it :xyxthumbs:

Gave the car a quick wash today to get the salt and dirt off that has accumulated over the past week. This is 4 days after 22ple application. This was done when the car was dirty, and the beading is still incredible.

Nice!!!!!!!!
At last, warm enough weather in the Illinois area.

Wow.

Gotta love clean black paint! I just washed her the other day and was amazed by the awesome reflections. I also applied Tuf Shine Permanent Tire Coating and finished up some other odds and ends on the interior and exterior so the car is completely detailed now. Looks great! :dblthumb2:
