Horrible wash mitt

I've never understood why people say "do it in a straight line instead of a circular motion to prevent swirls". Well if it's going to cause swirls in a circular motion it's going to cause dragstips in an up and down straight motion. Soon we'll be talking about removing drag strips instead of swirls.

I just got a gold micro chenelle mitt and it's the softest thing i've ever touched

The truth that a lot of people don't understand is that swirls are not circles at all. They are perfectly straight lines, bunched together that cover every single angle of a circle. If you look close enough, you'll see that none of the lines are curved.

This one.

As far as I'm concerned, best mitt on the market and you can buy it over the counter. If it doesn't scratch my soft clear coat, you guys don't have anything to worry about.

I have been using that mitt for a long time and i like it a lot and never had any issues with it :dblthumb2:

In reference to sea sponges

"Has a tremendous amount of nap to pull in dirt away from your paint during the wash"

Question. How does it do this?

"MOST IMPORTANT - they release dirt and other particulate picked up off the car better than any product on the market"

...which kinda contradicts your first point? I don't know, so I'm looking for an explanation that has some theory behind it.

Sea sponges feed by filtering ocean water. Millions of micro-fibers pull plankton and organic particles into the sponge and release anything not needed back into the water. – This is why they are naturally suited for safely washing vehicles - they effectively absorb and release particles.

This is the sea wool sponge I have been using, there are a variety of sea sponges, the sea wool sponges are the softest.

They will seem a bit stiff when dry, but once wet, they become extremely soft and highly absorbent. In fact, smaller sizes are used for washing newborn babies and infants because they are so soft and are naturally anti bacterial.

Scratches that only go in one direction can only be seen in a certain light at a certain angle, whereas circular scratches, ie circular scratches can be seen in any light and at any angle.
Mike Philips explained it in one of his videos.

This one.

Here's the deal. I have seen a bunch that look exactly like that one, were the same color as that one and were priced more than that one. NONE of them were the same. I couldn't believe that wash mitt did not scratch my paint. That's why you see me using it in my 2-bucket wash videos. That mitt is the ONLY mitt I have used for years. I bought it in a crunch one day and never went back to what I use to use.

I have a Griot's Garage one and am very satisfied with it. Before that I used a cotton chenille. My only complaint about cotton chenille is that they don't last. Otherwise, I think cotton chenille are perfectly safe and effective. Cotton chenille pass the CD scratch test.

Next thing you know Junkman's wash mitt will always be "sold out" like the border-less blonde towels. LOL

That's a pretty good description of how the sponge works when it was in the ocean but there's one problem with your description. The sponge you are washing your car with is dead, so it's not feeding on anything.

Just used one of the micro chenelle mitts from here and wow that thing is super soft and highly absorbent. It must suck up half a gallon of onr.

I didn't see any additional swirls when using it, my car's pretty mint right now but I did noticed very tiny fiber on the paint. Not sure if it's from the mitt or something else.

And I'm not sold on the fact that swirls are different than straight line scratches in any way. The light source shows the marks in a circular motion but they are slightly curved lines not circular.

No, the lines are NOT slightly curved, they are straight as a ruler. Look at the picture that I posted earlier. Here's another:

Sorry I worded my last statement wrong. I know they are just straight lines. Just didn't hit me that all straight lines would be better than ones in every direction.

I would say that neither are good. They are all equally bad.

Do you guys have good luck with the AG Cobra Micro-Chenille mitt not causing swirls? I like mine but they tend to soak up alot of water and get heavy. I mainly use them for lower panes and use a Carpro Merino Mitt for the upper part of the car.

Agreed.

But if you had to have one I'd rather have straight.

Nice 4 part video on polishing. Very informative

That's 5 part series. Me personally, I'd rather have neither but I can eliminate either just as effectively. Straight or swirls, they are equally fixable using the technique I outline in those videos.

My bad 5.

Me too, but I was saying before that what was the point of going up and down as opposed to side to side, if it's going to leave a mark it's going to leave a mark. Then someone commented and said if you leave a swirl, or straight lines in multiple directions as we discussed, that the light will show them at almost any angle where lines in the same direction will not reflect light as much and show as much. So I was saying it makes sense then to go with a back and forth or up and down motion rather than a circular wax on wax off motion.

I just used mine yesterday and it does soak up a ton of water. I just give it a good squeeze after rinsing it then a lighter squeeze after puting it in the wash bucket. The fact it holds more seems it would be less likely to scratch the paint.
