This is pretty much how I do it for newer cars, but you still want to avoid spraying water directly on the alternator, electronics, etc. but a light rinse is fine. Let the cleaner do the work.

Some nice work!

How many of you guys prefer all the plastic covers they put over everything in the engine compartments on newer cars? I guess they figured, people aren't going to clean 'em so might as well hide the grime under some plastic covers.

Personally, I like to see all the mechanical stuff and all the hoses and wires. It's a lot more work to keep clean, but looks nice when clean. I've also noticed that many new cars don't even provide dipsticks anymore.
