Paint Issue - Etching..?

I just read your first post and found the answer to my question...

I have an Azure blue 2004 Mustang Mach 1 with low miles that has been garage kept by me, and the previous owner who had it since 2006. From a distance, the paint looks great for its age.

When you get up close, you notice etching (or something) in what looks to be the clear coat.

This is in most of the horizontal surfaces of the car; the hood, roof, and fender tops and a little in the door tops.

So something in the air landed on the car.

Have you parked in any industrial areas with any type of smoke stacks emitting any kind of pollution?

Have you parked where a water sprinkler could have went off and sprinkled water on your car?

Do you live in a highly populated area?

Has there been any kind of construction near or around your car where it's parked outside, like at work?

To me, it looks like something has been sprayed into the air and then droplets landed on your car and etched the paint. Could be just about anything...

The answer will be to machine polish or machine compound to remove these paint defects.

You're going to need at a minimum a PC style DA Polisher or you could look for a qualified detailer on this forum in your area to do the project for you.

Unfortunately, this paint prob was there when I bought the car last year. I didn't see it when I first bought it as it was in February and a cloudy day. They just didn't pop out at you at the time. By the time March came around and I waxed it the first time, then I noticed them. I took it back to the dealership, but that didn't accomplish much. The still looks great, so I wasn't terribly concerned and felt they could be buffed out. The more I dig into it, the more it scares me.

The "PC style DA Polisher" you mentioned, is that like the Porter Cable model?

Okay, I stopped in to see Jimmy Buff-it's shop (I'm surprised they don't have to pay for that name) and had my paint looked at. The guy said he would be able to get the etchings or creators out, but could make the paint look better over-all. He said you would still see the water etchings, and maybe see them easier. I was hoping they could get my paint sorted out, but just knowing was the biggest battle for me. I knew I was not ready to repaint, so it was all up to buffing/detailing. Do you think the paint will look worse just because the rest of the surrounding paint is great looking?

Yeah I suggest trying to use a polish by hand/ do you have a machine it'll make all the worlds difference?

Well, my hood decal died this past week. It started to peel, so I removed it.

Now that the decal is gone, I think I'm going to buy a DA buffer and see if I can improve the surface. I think many of the etches are too deep for buffing out. But, I'll be happy if I can make it look better. Plus, I really want to be able to do this to my car. I do everything else to it, ya know.

I was surprised to see such noticeable paint fade when compared to the paint that was under the vinyl.
