Is it true that a 120v 15amp household electrical outlet can only handle 2.4 HP on a vac?

Bob,

Thanx for the 'power formula'! As I wrote my reply, I went completely brain dead. This getting old stuff is really getting 'OLD!'

Ya all just watched a college education go right into the dumper...LOL.

So I am correct? From a 120v, 15amp power source, you cannot get above about 2.4HP. The rest is all marketing except for peak, whatever that mean.

YES! Can't deny physics, even through slick marketing. Ever notice the "real" industrial vacuums like a Dayton or even Shop Vac's industrial line are in the 2 horsepower range until moving up to a 220 motor? Same goes for air compressors, the likes of home use Craftsman will advertise whatever they can get away with while a commercial duty Quincy and the like will list an accurate spec.

Then what I do look for? If I get 2 - 3 hp. I'm good. Then I guess attachments or the ability for attachments that are related to detailing.

Can two vacuums be the same hp but one still more powerful than the other? I've seen vacs at Goodwill before that were 2hp for cheap, and yes they worked. They sucked too.

^^^Yes!^^^
Even within the same "brands".

NOTE:
Remember what we've been discussing about vacuum cleaners' HP/HP-ratings, and the almost disingenuous
marketing tactics that some vacuum cleaner manufacturers still employ to induce consumer sales.

And it's the...
-Wattage of the vacuum cleaner's: Vacuum-motor;
-The vacuum-motor's ability to create: Airflow (CFM);
-The amount of: Sealed suction (water-lift measured in inches)
-Restrictions: Filtration system; Hoses and their: Inlet-sizes, bends, twists, and turns;
power-heads; canisters vs uprights; even the collection-bag, (or lack thereof)...

That has a bigger bearing on vacuum cleaners': Cleaning ability...
than any HP-rating ever has, or ever will.

:)

This all seems to remind me about the issue with snow blowers and lawn mowers. They used to be rated in HP, but now it's all about "cc"s, or Cubic inch.
As I recall, they got caught with some BS figures.
