For Manual Drivers, I thought this was funny!

All this talk of manual transmissions. This is what I learned on, a 1963 Ford Econoline 3 on the column, and I was NINE at the time. (That wasn't in 63, but not that many years afterwards.) ;)

It was my Dad's Dry Cleaning van and he kept a box of snow chains under the seat. When I was driving he'd put the box up in the seat so I'd have something to push back against while I sat on the very edge of the seat. So much for seatbelts! And you can bet, if there was an accident, you were the first one there, and the last one to leave. (probably under a sheet)

We had a place at the lake back then, and would go at least once a month and literally all summer. I'd drive everywhere we needed to go. Need to go get bait, I'll drive Dad. Go for more gas for the little fishing boat (10hp limit on a 650 acre lake), I'll drive Dad. Go out to eat... well of course I'd drive then (cause Dad was gonna' have a few cocktails if you know what I mean). ;)

By the time I was 13 I would drive around in Atlanta. Never forgot the first time he had me driving out working with him, FIRST DAY and we came up to a busy intersection with a red light on a freaking HILL. He figured he was testing me, I just slipped it into 1st, waited for green, and motored on through.

And of course our other car (from my teenage years) was an 71 Olds Vista Cruiser, just like the one on That 70's Show (except black with wood grain sides). :dblthumb2:

It was this color blue! (probably the same as below, just not faded)

3 on the tree was such a cool design.

Right arm around your girlfriend and shifting with your left arm thru (or over the column) the steering wheel, cruzin' thru the drive-in.

Ah poop, now I feel old again (LOL).

I was lucky enough to drive a 57' Chev w/ a 3 on the tree. Imagine 50 yrs from now, "I remember my index/middle fingers getting tired on the paddles", LOL!

FWIW, Where I live sitting on the fwy in bumper to bumper traffic is the norm, so I bought the shiftable auto when I bought my current car. A manual is just not practical here, but I do sorely miss the last car I had with a stick.

The take rate for manuals in all cars sold in US is 8% per Road & Track mag. Those of you with manuals, be proud to be part of an exclusive club.

If I was in bumper to bumper day in and day out I too would probably have to get some type oof modern auto.....I guess:-P

Especially bumper to bumper on hills. Around here, people barely give you an inch.

One of the features I like about modern BMW automatics is they stay in place when you take your foot off the brake... until you hit the gas. Makes driving in San Francisco a breeze.

Quite a useful feature when all you see is the sky over your hood.

Yup, BMW has a "brake assist" feature.
It will hold the brake for 2 full seconds. It actually made me lazy in the R56. But yeah, it was nice... I don't deny that. :xyxthumbs:

They also have automatic drying brakes when you are in wet conditions.

Speaking of automatic drying brakes... it also has a similar function that brings the pads closer to the rotors when it detects a panic throttle lift. For instance, when I'm turning right from a red light, and I'm checking traffic coming from the left... on some occasions I've applied a little throttle to leave, but then spot a pedestrian running across at the same moment. The brakes become MUCH more responsive, and even with a slight tap the car jams to a stop immediately.

I love cars with auto hill hold. It just makes life so much easier, but a lot of the time I'm driving cars without it. The hand brake works fine though when you really need it.

Now I'm really confused..... :dunno:

Why not just use the 'real' brakes on a hill? I mean with an auto, it's just going to sit there and idle till you push the go pedal. And of course with a stick, your left foot goes on the clutch, (and if you don't want to put a ton of wear on the throwout bearing you can even put it in neutral), then when the light changes, clutch, 1st gear, left foot comes up, right foot goes down. Just like walking, one foot in front of the other.

Now if you're doing trick J turns, or sliding around a 180° whip into a parking space.... THEN the ol' parking brake handle comes in handy. ;)

Permission to repost? =D

This meme is amazing.

Yes, absolutely.

I recall a news story where a guy driving his new 'vette was carjacked, and the guys who jacked him couldnt drive it because it was a manual. So here this dude is laying in the road yelling things like "PUSH IN THE CLUTCH THEN SHIFT TO THE TOP LEFT" because they legitimately couldnt figure it out. Pretty funny, emotional trauma aside

...if one is going to own a sports vehicle, they should at least

experience the joy of driving it with a standard transmission
[at some point in their lives]...

^^^Been there...Done that: A novemdecillion times.^^^ :)
unless you have a disability that does not allow you to do so,
that's another story.
Yep...
That's a story that really ticks some folks off when they see my Blue-disabled-parking-identification-permit
being displayed in my sports cars.
Irrespective of their thoughtlessness, though...I still have FUN!!

Hopefully their turn won't ever come.

My wife would be challenged to tell you the difference in a brake pedal and a clutch pedal
