Any of you have this problem? Every time I open the garage doors while detailing, a hummingbird or two will fly in and not be able to figure out how to leave. Any suggestions?

You have a garage opener? Does the string (for hand opening) have a RED handle?

Replace the red handle with something non-red. I just used a chunk of 1inch dowel.

Take a look around, ANYTHING red seems to attract them. Especially things that are hanging. . My pull-down trouble light was red, ended up repainting it black. The red Snap-On tools boxes are ignored, so I just looked at hanging objects.

Those little guys just don't seem to know how to fly out, always want to fly 'up' (I've actually had robins and finches cruise thru, big door out the back door). This time of year they are stocking up for their migration, so lotza of the little hummers are around.

Good luck...

Bill

Agree with Billl. We had the red emergency handle and it attracted hummingbirds. I just covered it up with tape and that helped quite a bit. If they do get in, I've found that opening a window, they will fly out the open window when it gets to be more light outside than inside.

Already tried covering red. Guess KY birds are color-blind. I tried the window and even tried putting a feeder where it could see it and hopefully fly out. Dead by morning.

I use a pond fish net that looks like mosquito netting. I scoop the hummer up in the net and release him outside the garage. Now, I always keep a full HB feeder around the back of the house to lure them away from the garage and that seems to be working.

They are attracted to vibrant reds and yellows thinking they are flowers. Changing the handle to black or brown should make it less appealing.

Consider the nuisance a gift.... set up a hummingbird feeder in a good spot around the house (if not already there), and enjoy the view.

Oh I really like the little guys. Just want them to be safe. Thanks for the feedback.
