A quart of gas and a match? No seriously, the coating (whatever it may have been) is gone in some areas. Those areas will never come back, and you'll likely remove even more "paint". Being as small as it is, I would paint it. El cheapo roller especial.

Why are you polish adverse? Any clay will still instill some micromarring and swirling. Clay/Nanoskin isn't going near a vehicle I'm not polishing. That said, Nanoskin leaves visible marring on black vehicles. I would bet it's present on all colors. Even the most milktoast polish will...

If you clay often enough, you would want to look into cheaper lube options. ONR diluted, IUDJ diluted, etc.

That gunk on the turn signal lever is a combo of lotion and makeup. I just did a Jeep Compass with the same gunk all over the turn signal stalk and on the edge of the door on the black textured strip next to the window. Nothing would take it off the exterior door trim.
