The crud is rusty brown. I used meguiars hot rims all wheel and tire cleaner twice. It cleaned most of the wheel pretty well with some elbow grease thrown in :) I think you are right about steel wool but what grade? I hope to be ordering some sonax and ironX soon and will try next time i do...

Probably tough to see but all rims had a ring of crud that wheel cleaner and brush wouldn't touch. Rims look much better now but ring is still there
