Full body scanner for cars

This is what Hertz is starting to use for their rental cars. Definitely stories popping up about people not being happy about it - getting automatically charged based on the scan without people reviewing it first and high likelihood that Hertz isn't actually using that money to repair the cars.

I see this as a great money maker for rental companies. I also see needing a lawyer to dispute it and potentially facing forced arbitration.

Does anyone think it can tell the difference between a scratch and a grease pen mark?

I've always treated any rental car like my own, I even clean them when I take them back only to be told off, for doing it.

I was up at Cradle Mountain few weeks back and saw some Chinese tourists and said "Get down...Take cover" they were driving 2025 Nissan X- trails that looked nice.

I wonder how it will work on a wet car, say if you return it when it's raining.

New opportunity, fake spray on bird poo, for hiding small scratches on rental cars when you return them.

then they charge you a cleaning fee instead of a fee for damage. planning on taking my vacation rental to the car wash after i'm done before turning it in. Avis is apparently charging people cleaning fees now.

The last thing I rented was a small truck when we were moving house, I did clean the windshield, but that was as soon as I got it, and I used my leaf blower to blow the cabin out, the dogs rode with me to the new house, even though they said no pets allowed, they didn't notice anything.

A guy at work bought some Chevy pickup truck and when he takes it to the dealer for oil changes, they run it though some big scanner that shows him every defect on it. He showed me the results of it and he has a ding in his passenger side tire and some rock chips in his bumper.
Pretty wild stuff.

I got suckered into many reddit suggestions when I visited the Hertz sub.

One person complained about being charged for a ding, even posting a video of "no damage" after returning the vehicle.
The video was terrible at best, but what's funny is that backfired and multiple people pointed out the ding in the video.

Many posted issues that would normally fall under normal wear and tear are now being charged to the customer, plus they add the 'loss of use' fee to get it repaired. Total money grab and no way they are repairing those vehicles. I won't rent with them, but I had one thought to rent and buy their coverage and "park" in many spots that people just happen to door ding, like all over. Make the scanner go crazy.
