I had the same problem with 3-1/2 gal buckets from Orchard Supply. I ended up wedging in a purple eraser to keep the grit guard from moving around. You can spot it at the top of the grit guard.

I agree. Meguiar's wash mitt easily absorbs dirt from paint onto the mitt and cleans up incredibly well with a grit guard. Excellent product for a washless or rinseless wash.
