looks like the polish has reacted with it. aluminium can be funny stuff. did the polish say 'suitable for use on aluminium' on the container? if not, id suggest looking of one that does

chemical guys fabric sealant is excellent. that and their bare bones undercarriage spray, which i use for dressing wheel wells is about all i use of their stuff. That said, i tried and liked their optical clarity polishes last year.

i use a nitrile glove, works an absolute treat. seems to work a bit better than a latex glove in my experience. just rub the fabric and all the hair bunches up together, then suck it up with a vacuum

call a pro. if thats a rear taillight in the picture, then thats a big scratch. you're not gonna find anything thats gonna remove it safely working by hand.

you certainly could. never the less, the fact is that there are multi layer paint gauges on the market that will read automotive sheet metal. I've just contacted olympus, as it it looks like they do one too. it'll be interesting to see where it falls in the price bracket between the positector...

wearing a support belt can really help too. i really notice the difference if i leave for work without one on. just be cautious of anything the has fastenings at the front, as its all to easy to scratch a wing leaning over to clean the screen

As a rule of thumb anything under about 100um is starting to get down to the wire, but as the guys have already said, it varies from vehicle to vehicle.
