Had a reply from PELT today regarding their device

Thanks for your email and interest in our PELT Gauge.

Our uPELT501A can successfully measure automotive type coatings down to a thickness of about 8 microns. It doesn’t matter what the substrate material is or how thick it is and actually, sheet metal gives the strongest signal. PELT also works well on fiberglass, plastic and carbon fiber.

I can’t speak too much of the Positector, since I haven’t used one personally, but some of our customers have reported similar experience with thin multiple layers. We do know our gauge uses a different ultrasonic frequency which makes thin, multiple layer measurements possible.
