HT Cyan falling apart after 1 use - what am I doing wrong?

I will eventually get some more pads, but I had already spent so much on supplies to get started that the thought of spending even another $50 on pads was just not something I wanted to do. I realize I am short-changing myself only having 2 of each pad (cyan, tangerine, crimson) but it did...

HT Cyan falling apart after 1 use - what am I doing wrong?

I cleaned the pads after every section pass, I was not working dirty or doing damage to the paint. Perhaps my technique with the cleaning brush could use some work, but I found that if I used light pressure to keep the pad rotating, the brush wasn't as effective as the towel on the fly method...

HT Cyan falling apart after 1 use - what am I doing wrong?

I grabbed a pad cleaning brush from the neighbor up the street last night (same one AG sells) and I wasn't too impressed with the process. As Mike Phillips said, the DA stops rotating when you apply pressure with the brush. I thought the terry towel method got the pad much cleaner.

HT Cyan falling apart after 1 use - what am I doing wrong?

I have considered a pad cleaning brush, but I've always stayed away from it for a few reasons: -- Mike Phillips suggests it doesn't work as well on a DA as it does on a rotary -- A few members on MOL were reporting that using a pad brush was really chewing up their pads My newest method of...

HT Cyan falling apart after 1 use - what am I doing wrong?

The wear in the center of the pad was from my cleaning method, I have discontinued that and the other pad is holding up much, much better. I do really like these pads, they don't become saturated as easily and I'm getting a great work time with Ultimate Compound and Ultimate Polish. Update...

HT Cyan falling apart after 1 use - what am I doing wrong?

The ultimate compound is working just fine for me honestly, it's taking out the swirls and leaving a nice glassy finish on my silver paint:

HT Cyan falling apart after 1 use - what am I doing wrong?

Ok I'm back at it again today I will grab an old toothbrush to use. Honestly I think what was happening was I was sticking my finger wrapped in a microfber into the center of the pad and I think that was chewing it up very quickly. I stopped doing that and now I've been just blotting the old...

HT Cyan falling apart after 1 use - what am I doing wrong?

Good to know, I really don't feel like I was putting a whole lot of downward pressure on the machine, especially on the vertical surfaces. This car has very hard paint compared to some others that I have worked on, so I suppose I will need to expect some increased wear on the pad given the more...

HT Cyan falling apart after 1 use - what am I doing wrong?

Hi everyone, I just bought a Griots 6" ROP and some LC Hydro-tech low-profile pads for it. I was out putting them to use last night working on a BMW (very hard paint) and noticed that after about 1/4th of the car the hydro-tech pad was starting to tear. I work very slowly and carefully...

    Griots or PC?

I would say Griots because it's slightly cheaper currently (it's on sale) and it has a lifetime warranty. You can buy it knowing it will be a tool you can use for the rest of your life. While this is probably also true about the very well made Porter Cable, you may get unlucky and have it conk...

[Pics] Unboxing the Griots Garage 6" Polisher

I wasn't sure what AutoGeek's price was on the unit, I figured they may be selling it at a loss if they did a price match + 5% which I didn't want them to do. I always find it best to buy straight from the manufacturer when it comes to bigger ticket items like this as then they have a record...

[Pics] Unboxing the Griots Garage 6" Polisher

I used it tonight to throw a quick coat of Mothers Carnauba Cleaner Wax onto my car, which needed a quick wash and wax. It was free when I bought some stuff at AdvancedAutoParts a while ago, and I have to say it leaves a really impressive gloss on the paint for an over the counter cleaner wax...

[Pics] Unboxing the Griots Garage 6" Polisher

Thank you, I'm very excited! I'm still a detailing noob, but I've been doing my best to get up to speed as rapidly as possible. Someone gave me a 1st Gen PC7424 and while it is a nice tool, I just felt limited by its ability to maintain pad rotation on curved panels and body contours. I...

[Pics] Unboxing the Griots Garage 6" Polisher

I just snagged a Griots DA on sale for $111 shipped, which really sealed the deal for me as I was debating between the PC7424XP, the Meguiars G110v2, and the GG6". I know some people really like seeing exactly what you get when you buy these products so I thought I would take some pictures as I...

    How to clean pads?

Meguiars Super Degreaser and APC+ work well to clean pads. When I finish working I use a towel to get as much out as I can (the clean on the fly method) then spray them with with SD or APC+ and let it sit for 10 minutes. I then rinse it out, then let it soak in hot water and dawn for an hour...

Backing plate questions for my new GG 6" ROP

Thanks Mike for the educated reply. I will stick with the LC backing plate. I can't wait to try out the Griots polisher -- I've heard nothing but good things.

Backing plate questions for my new GG 6" ROP

I found a local PBE that has the Meguiars 5" BP (W67DA) -- unless someone talks me out of it I think that's what I'll go with. Saves a few dollars on shipping and I feel like that would be a smart choice because I would love to try the DA Microfiber System at some point. Yes, no, maybe?

Backing plate questions for my new GG 6" ROP

I am going to give back the 7424 to the person who originally gave it to me, so I will need to purchase a backing plate of my own. The GG 6" polisher comes with a 6" backing plate so I can't use that one for most of my pads unfortunately. I read somewhere (can't recall who or where) that the...
