Griots or PC?

I have the PC 7424XP and love it. I have also used the Griot's a few times and loved it. Either one are great machines. You can't go wrong, its hard for me to pick one because they are so close. Each has its pros and cons.

I would say Griots because it's slightly cheaper currently (it's on sale) and it has a lifetime warranty. You can buy it knowing it will be a tool you can use for the rest of your life. While this is probably also true about the very well made Porter Cable, you may get unlucky and have it conk out on you after the warranty expires.

:props: Porter Cable 7424xp :props:

I have the Porter Cable 7424 polisher and have had it for about 10 ears now. I've used it allot through these years and continue to use it today.

About 6 years ago during a bad storm that dropped 14" of rain, my basement got flooded and it spent 3 days under water. After we got everything cleaned up I tool it out to the garage blew it out with compressed air then let it sit for a week and dry...Worked perfectly and has ever since.

Why do I recommend the Porter Cable?

The above example
Porter Cable designs and manufactures and sells Power Tools
The Porter Cable 7424 seems to have very few failures or returns

Why don't I recommend the Griot's?

I've never used one
Griot's doesn't design or manufacture them
Many Autogeek members report the Griot's polisher has a high rate of failure and return and more than likely the reason they offer a full lifetime warranty.

the only thing i didn't like is that Megs seem to have a different system. Its not a hook and loop system like the others so you seem to need different pads that only Megs sell. Yes the motor is a key player too.

I own the Meguiars machine,
This machine has the standard da backing plate. Interchangable with the Griots and Porter Cable machines. Any hook and loop pad will work well with this machine. I found that upgrading to a Lake Country hook and loop backing plate made this machine much more usefull as the pads stick much better to the lc backing. Also got the 5 inch plate so I could use 5.5 inch pads.:xyxthumbs:

it's leaps and bounds over the PC7424XP which IMO isn't that much of an improvement over the older one. any man made product is subject to failure at anytime and the PC7424XP has had issues too (broken shaft, etc). i would even purchase the G110v2 over the PC7424XP as well. try out the GG6 someday, i'm sure you be pleasantly surprised...

I haven't received it yet but I just ordered the PC7424xp and 5.5" pads. I've seen what the Megs g110v2 and 7.5"pads can do with 4.2 amps of power on paint worse than mine is, and based on that and the comments of Mike Phillips and others, I'm certain that the PC will so everything I need it to.

I have Both the 7424XP and the New GG . With either one you will be able to accomplish what ever you wish. Personally I'm partial to the PC as I still have my 7336 that I have had for about 8 years . It stills performs flawlessly. But you can't go wrong with either.

i have the same question myself, only mine is more along the lines of reliability, the power is #2 on my list of needed things but power is useless if the tool fails constantly. from my research on trade sites such as alibaba seems like the griots is made in china with their lable being put on it here in america, i zoomed in on the griots and the china one and they look to be the EXACT same execept for the rear portion of polisher where vents are that area is more rounded on griots compared to the china one. only difference is the standard handle on the china one and the bail handle on the griots. power/wattage rating is the same..sad thing is i have checked into ordering one from china as a "sample" peice and they want 35$ for the polisher and 95$ for courier fee. unless griots is having the people in china manufacturer to their tollerances. i dont know. my main thing is reliability. as the PC7424 i can get for $125 shipped and the griots i can find for $100 shipped. still trying to decide....my mind keeps jumping back and forth between the two.

Just goes to show people have different opinions because I completely disagree.

I find the XP version to dramatically be better at maintaining pad rotation under pressure and that's where the rubber hits the road and I've been using the PC ever since it was introduced to the paint polishing world sometime in the early 1990's.

Heck I even wrote an article to help people with the first generation PC's to maximize their ability since I know there's millions of them in garages across this country.

The short how-to guide for using a DA Polisher
How to maximize the ability of the 1st Generation Porter Cable Dual Action Polishers

I've never had any problems with any of the PC's I've owned. I've worn PC's out from buffing out hundreds of cars but nothing lasts forever, not even you or I. You can drive over a PC with a truck then pick it up and get back to work.

When I work on a car now days I mix it up just to stay fresh with all the tools in my arsenal but no complaints ever about the PC.

Rant
I thinking Porter Cable is missing the boat by not paying any attention to discussion forums like AGO because they are getting their clocks cleaned by these other companies that do listen to us and are continually improving their products.

Knock knock... hello? Anyone home?

I'm always thankful that Griot's and Meguiar's actively seeks out and encourages customer feedback on how they can improve their products and at the end of the day to the victor goes the spoils.

In the end, they will all get the job done if you use the right pad and product for the job and of course... good technique... which is outlined in here,

yes and most everyone will on whatever topic/subject it may be. one will have to experience and try it out for themselves in regards to any tool. from my personal experience, i would choose another option that i personally feel that suits me better...

So, I first bought a PC and it did a good job, I was not 100% pleased with it, and I saw in the manual that I could return it within 90 days, no questions. I aranged to get a refund and ordered a Griot's 6" to compare. I know this question has been asked several times, so I thought I would post my findings. Thanks to AG for delivering both polishers.

Please do not think I am a PC or Griot's homer, as I offer a third person view, I do not like some Griot's products, some I do. I am not a big B&D fan either, but I have plenty of their tools.

I prefer the Griot's, it has more power, it fits my hands better and the backing plate is closer to the size of my pads. The instructions are clearer and the bail handle it easier for me to hold in position on vertical surfaces.

Please note the Grip dia above is actually the grip circumference, sorry for the error, the "edit" button is gone for me.

Griots DA and Meguiars Microfiber correction system is a kickbutt combo. I have yet been able to stop the Griot from rotating on speed 6. If you order the Griots DA get the one with the 25ft power cord save you from having to worry about an exstension cord.
