Just thought I would share this...since I've actually saved myself quite a bit of money.

For those who know me well...probably know about my little incident with the sign on the roof of my shop.

Long story short...it was old, had a really windy day, and it fell down and go boom, ha.

So, the sign was in two pieces that were 3' x 8'. So, I made some phone calls to see what it would cost to get a new sign printed. Bear in mind...this is no small sign. 16' long all together! After calling around and getting quoted some really high prices...like over a thousand bucks! I started asking my buddies if anyone has a connection with any printing companies. Sure enough...my buddy Jasons wife works for PrintNH.

So, called her up...and she was able to get a sign that matched my van printed up for $384. But that was just the laminated plastic sign. If I wanted backing for it...that would have really made the price sky rocket. Here is the print out I got done...

So, I went to Home Depot and had some pressure treated plywood cut 3' x 8'. I attached the sign to the plywood with gorilla glue, and used some rims I have laying around for weight while it dries over night. Here is a picture of that...

I also found some aluminum strips that were 3.5' long each. I bought 16 of them to go around the edges of the sign to stop water or anything else for that matter from getting between the sign and the wood and rotting it out. They will also make for a really nice border. Because they are going to be a border as well...I painted them black with Rustoleum. I bought some tack nails to attach it to the wood and the sign. I will spray paint the nails when they are in as well. Here's the strips...

That is as far as I've gotten so far. I did all that today, and I plan on having a finished product at some point tomorrow. I will update this thread when the sign is finished. I will also post pics of when it's on the roof!!!!

I'm not posting this to show off or anything. I'm posting this cause this actually caused quite a headache for me to figure out believe it or not. Everyone I asked had no answers for me when it came to this sign, unless I wanted to spend over a grand. I think it's coming out really well, and will blow my old sign out of the water...and will look very professional. And it was CHEAP!!

The plywood was $30, and was even cut for me. The strips were about $1.50 each. Rustoleum was cheap, and the nails were cheap. Hopefully this inspires someone to not blow money on a big sign...you can do it yourself! :dblthumb2:

Well, this thread completely bombed, and nobody gave two turds. But, I hate it when I'm paying attention to a thread...and the OP never bothers to finish the project, or post the results.

SO, I got the sign up on my roof today after putting the border on and waiting for a day that wasn't raining or windy.

Here's the results so far...

I don't recommend putting a 16' long sign up like this by yourself. I had a helper, and even then it was difficult.

I plan on adding some lighting to the sign as well for at night. That will really catch some eyes! I'll post those pics when it's complete. Don't know when that is gonna be. I got other things to do! lol

So, if there's any lurkers who didn't comment but were paying attention to this thread...there ya go! Thanks!

That look really good. How much did they want for the backing?

I knew somebody was watching! haha

Well the steel frame was already up there from my old sign...if that's what you're asking about. But the backing to the sign is just pressure treated plywood from Home Depot. Costed me $30. :dblthumb2:

Nice Bro!:dblthumb2: Looking good!

Thanks!!

Wish you very well with the business. Garage looks great. Next time I visit Temple perhaps I will stop by! (last time I drove out there gas was about 1.79...., I'm in Indiana)

Temple??? Never heard of it. I'm in New Hampshire.

Temple is 35 miles SW of Manchester. Very small town. I have a family there and love to visit the mountains.

Very good job on the sign. That's the way to save money, more people are going to have to start thinking the same way if they are going to make it in this economy.

:dblthumb2:Good job!! and GOOD LUCK!!

We weren't ignoring your post, we were just waitin' for finished product...LOL.

That said...LOOKS REALLY GOOD!

Hmmm, lighted at night...might be on to something.

Don't know how I missed this thread before, but the sign came out awesome man! Glad you were able to save yourself some money.

Really!? I grew up in Manch, and never heard of Temple, ha. Well, either way...stop in some time!

No kidding! When I first posted this...I thought it was bumped, ha. Apparently not! And yes, definitely on to something with the lights. I was actually planning on mounting some solar lights up there. That way I don't need to plug them in. I don't necessarily want it lit up...I'm fine with just illuminated.

Definitely saved myself some money. For a 16' sign...I paid next to nothing. I paid $384 for the sign itself, $32 for the PT plywood, and probably about $20 more on just random stuff like screws, the border, and glue. Well under $450 for everything. Not too shabby at all.

When I saw my old sign come down...I immediately thought in my head that it would cost me at least a grand to replace. But then I got creative!! Thanks man! :dblthumb2:

That sign is sickkk!!! (dope? ... sweet haha, incase someone gets confused).

Lighting at night would definitely be the cherry on top. Just think, as people drive past, that sign with lights will an eye catcher and may just mean a future sale.

Kris,

I never realized that signs were all that expensive but your thread settles that!

I think your new sign came out great and looks spectacular on the front of your shop. A little thought and ingenuity certainly brought the price down a bit and looks like it'll last for years to come...:props:

Sign looks sick! With a little research you save a lot of money. I always research products and try to find the cheapest one possible.
