What is a recommended pad when using the Ultimate Compund with a D/A?

Im sure this answer will vary as your product/pad combo can vary depending on what your trying to achieve. I've had luck using it with orange ccs pads for what its worth

What is a recommended pad when using the Ultimate Compound with a D/A?

Ultimate Compound is a SMAT product, this means you can vary the aggressiveness or non-aggressiveness of the product by changing the pad and how long you buff.

For deep swirls, scratches and water spot etching you can use a Surbuf pad or an aggressive foam cutting pad

For for less aggressive abrading power you can use a foam polishing pad and theoretically you could even use a foam finishing pad.

  • What are you working on?
  • What are you trying to accomplish?
Note that for a in-depth discussion on your specific detailing project it's usually best to start your own thread instead of tagging onto someone else's thread.

Ok,
Looks like the Wolfgang products fit the bill for this project, so here's what I'm what I'm thinking for my first order:
Porter Cable 7424xp
Lake Country 5" backing plate
LC 5.5" flat pads 6pk (2 orange, 2 white, 2 blue)
Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover 3.0 16 oz.
Wolfgang Finishing Glaze 3.0 16 oz.
Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant 3.0
Mango Breeze Microfiber Towels 12 Pack
DP Polishing Pad Rejuvenator
Wolfgang Car Care Handbook
Wolfgang Leather Conditioner (sample)

How do the Mango towels compare to the towels included in the Mothers clay bar kit or the Autozone house branded towels? Working within a budget, so the high-dollar towels will come later. How well does the DP cleaner work removing the Wolfgang products from the pads?

The DP Polishing Pad Rejuvenator works great at cleaning and removing any water soluble compounds and polishes, which is most any professional grade compounds and polishes as these don't tend to have waxes or other insoluble ingredients in them.

When it comes to removing waxes and paint sealants out of wax pads or buffing pads then it's more difficult for any cleaner because these types of product don't break down easily in water... that's kind of a good thing or they would just wash off your car.

It's funny in that you'll see posts from time to time where people are expressing frustration cleaning their wax and sealant buffing pads and for the reasons they're frustrated, are the reasons they're happy they just don't know it yet.

The good news is you really only need to clean your compound and polish pads as when you're applying waxes and sealants you should be applying a thin coating and thus you don't normally get build-ups of waxes and paint sealants in your buffing pads to the point where cleaning them is an issue.

Make sense?

Great pad cleaner by hand or with a pad washer...

Thanks guys!
Any more thoughts on the pad selection (orange for the swirl remover, white for the glaze, blue for the sealer), and the Mango towels? Oh, what's the realistic lifespan of the pads before they start degrading?

Your pad selection is a very popular selection and works great for a lot of people with a variety of products on a variety of tools with just about any product line...

When using pads like these on a DA Polisher like a Porter Cable you can expect to get plenty of use out of them... there is no hard answer like, 5 cars or 20 cars because there's too many variables but it's the least of your worries.

Just wash them as best as you can after use and then place them upside down somewhere they can dry where air can flow through and around them.

After they dry, store them someplace they will stay clean until you need them again for a new detailing project.

Done!
Got my order in this morning to take advantage of the 15% off sale, decided against the Mango towels... This is gonna be fun!!

Chris, have you ever used the original HT's? If so how would you compare the new ones to the original ones? I have not tried the new low pros yet, I have SO many of the original ones. However I do have a couple of the new ones Richard sent me to try out, just haven't had the opportunity yet. Looking forward to it though:props:
I also like the HT's for DA correction better than CCS pads, and the HT's do finish down oh SO VERY nicely...

I have only used the low profile ones. I was waiting to use up my CCS stock (i bought a ton a couple years ago) and the low pro came at the prefect time. I am massivey impressed with this product.

I have always been very impressed with the original HT's. I can't wait to try the low pros, I am sure they will be even better (hard to believe they could be any better). But I am sure they will be, as we know "thin is in".

I sent you one of each, you should use them. I love them very much, perfect for a DA. I have a couple regular size HT's that I'm willing to trade off.

Ya, I know. Believe me I am going to use them, and I can't wait. However I have a special project comming up where they will get put to the test :D

I have found that the newer Mustangs "in general" have a very hard clear coat. I have also found that for me m105/m205 with either HT or flat pads corrects it the best. m105/m205 really is very easy to work with. Since the abrasives are non-diminishing, you simply stop working the product when you achieve the desired level of correction. One of the keys when using this product is to properly prime your pads with the product itself. Then use fairly heavy pressure for the first few passes, and lighten the pressure on the remaining passes. (Be sure to put a mark with a sharpie on the back of the backing plate, so that you can make sure the pad is always rotating).

Note: I have used both the WG twins and the Meggs twins on "08" and"09" Mustang paint, and the Meggs twins is what I found to work best for me.
Tad is right about the clearcoat. It is ceramic. The 105/205 combo works well. You may want to try the new Optimum Hyper Compound spray and their spray polish too. They wont dust near as much. HydroTech pads are the way to go IMO. A 2 pack of SurBuff will cut the bad swirls best IME.
