I think the whole thing with the conditioners really came into focus for me the other morning washing my blue car
I rinsed, foamed with Gold Class, agitated emblems etc, and hit a couple of gecko bomb spots I knew were on the hood with my mitt while the foam was still on the hood
The mitt was soaked in Gold Class bucket solution as well and it felt like it was riding on ball bearings over the hood
At first I thought this is awesome, no way am I scratching the paint, but after rinsing and seeing the gecko bombs mostly intact I thought this sucks, it's not dissolving the stuff or letting the mitt scrub it off
On a whim I grabbed a bottle of CHEAP store brand soap I had casually tossed in a cart to get me to free shipping on a household items order
I had tried this soap once and it reminded me of Blue Coral, it very well may have been the same just rebottled for the big box chain
I mixed up a cannon load a bit on the heavy side and sprayed it on and it was on the thin side but it really clung to the surface well
I got a clean mitt and soaked it with foam from the cannon and went after the spots and this stuff had an exact opposite effect from the Gold Class
It made my mitt feel like it was chemically bonded to the hood, it felt like a clay mitt on a really dirty panel, that grabby locked together feeling you get until the contaminants are gone and it starts to glide
It was weird and really hard to explain but it just felt like stuff was happening and cleaning was going on, whereas in retrospect the Gold Class made me feel like the mitt wasn't even touching the paint
I rinsed the hood and the gecko bombs were gone and after I finished the rest of the car and dried it I went over the hood with a fine tooth comb in the areas I was "scrubbing" on and I found zero marring of any kind
I will continue to use up my Gold Class for light maintenance washes when I am only fighting dust but for stuck on contaminants I feel I need something heavier
Although I probably won't buy anymore of the cheap blue stuff it did teach me a lesson and I will quit going on autopilot when it comes to products I have used in the past
I have lots of half gallons of Gold Class and I will use it for bucket washes for light maintenance but I will be ordering a few products suggested here for more aggressive washes
Hit Dislike on accident.
I haven't tried many of the store branded soaps. If the car is really dirty I typically use an APC 1:8 or 1:10 and spray it on the car dry. Let it sit for a couple mins and then foam over that. Normally my cars don't get that dirty and I rarely clean others' cars anymore though.
