OK here is a trick I used with 2" pads and sanding discs which I plan on using with my 1" and 2" pads. I use a rotary polisher with a drill chuck attachment that I attach to a flexible shaft . These are available at most automotive supply stores (I got mine at Princess Auto). I set the rotary at the desired speed (usually fairly low to start) and use the flexible shaft as an extension. You can precision buff and the rotary doesn't move much. It's not a pretty sight balancing the rotary while you try to precesion polish but it works.
