100% Perfect Paint. No Debate

So I just wanted to show all a rarer treat at what perfect paint looks like. Fresh Baked out of the booth, 1 Hour old. The car is an Infiniti FX37 solid black, used Sikkens paint system (grey scale), matched orange peel to factory. Driver door blend, passenger full repair and paint. Soft line end on rear quarter. I will admit there are a few specs of dust, but nothing that cant be fixed! This section is perfect.

Working at the #1 collision and paint place in Texas I would have to say that's not perfect. Why? Because nothing will ever be perfect :)
 
I like your confidence, and it does look good. But perfect? Strong statement.
 
If it has any orange peel at all it's not perfect.

But yeah I do understand you matched the factory paint.
 
Missed this

Spraying orange peel free is virtually impossible. Like to get it flat as possible with modern paint systems requires layering it THICK! In doing so you run into other problems and lots of runs and drips around the edges. Even yet it won't be 100% peel free, but close (say 95%?). Older stuff that is not VOC compliant could possibly do it, but I have no idea as I have never seen it. Also orange peel is important and necessary to help hide imperfections such as dents, panel gap inconsistency, waves, scratches, and other imperfections.

I am saying this is perfect because there are ZERO imperfections. Not a single swirl, run, dust/nib. As soon as you touch any paint, it is no longer perfect. Orange peel we can control to a degree, but in this case we needed it to match factory.

Yeah, that's why I said I understand you had to match the factory orange peel.

Well you can wet sand after spraying the clear and make it flat, but then that would be a whole different job and not relevant.

Absolutely. Definitely more than enough clear to do it. Look amazing too! It's solid black and extremely soft still, just polished the soft line out; pretty flat, towel is marring it tho. Like I said, touch it and it's not perfect.

Fresh paint is very soft until it cures as you know...

There is nothing quite like a custom paint job though. :D

Try unbaked clear! Damn hybrids can't be baked (batteries). Nightmare and a half.

But a true custom job is awesome. Always try to do the best, but quite often time won't allow.
 
Orange peel in itself is an imperfection. Hiding imperfections with imperfections is not the right way to do things. Your posts are full of contradictions including the topic title.

This is a detailing forum their is all kinds of ways to get rid of the other imperfections you are talking about other than using an imperfection to do it.

Now all that being said I do understand that you were matching the rest of the vehicle and it does look good. But I would definitely disagree that it is 100% perfect.
 
From where I sit, this paint is an easy 2,365.5 miler (distance from me to you, LOL!). From where you crouch more like a 2 footer ;)

Paint looks awesome Andrew! Too bad it will have to be touched.

I think his point was that it was flawlessly clean with no scratches, contaminants, or dirt. The orange peel was matched; but 'flawless' would be getting the orange paint out of the whole car methinks!

LOL I did not know this is a detailing forum...

I think you are misinterpreting my previous statements of orange peel. We did not spray the orange peel to hide ANYTHING. Skilled bodymen dont hide stuff, hacks do. Orange peel levels are determined by the factory to hide imperfections (not all factory body work is perfect, trust me). I mentioned this as a general FYI for people.

Now, I am not counting orange peel here because all paint inherently has it (anyone who claims they can lay it orange peel free, come teach me), I am claiming perfection from a defect free point. Put any light you want on this, under any scrutiny, there is nothing in this section. As soon as it is touched, it is not perfect and perfect becomes a theory again.

If you don't like this kind of post, I dont need to go thru the trouble of posting and keep it all a mystery.

Thanks! One of the bone heads putting the car back together leaned up on it... ugh sometimes I wish I didn't care.

Depends on the car. I have only seen Toyota/Lexus systems first hand. Time and $ dictate it is cheaper to send the whole car in and deal with the paint after.

If we can remove the fender, we do. If it is a quarter panel (Lexus RX450H rear), whole car has to go in.
