1942 Oldsmobile Club Coupe Sedan - Cross Your Fingers for a Miracle Extreme Makeover!

In the first edition of my how-to book The Art of Detailing and in the second edition of my how-to book, The Complete Guide to a Show Car Shine on page 37 to 39, there's a chapter called,

Paint Condition Categories

In which there are 12 different categories of paint conditions listed and defined. The paint on this 1942 falls into categories #5, #6 and #12, that would be,

#5 - Severely Neglected

#6 - Horrendous Swirls

#12 - Past the Point of No Return

Yet I think with a little patience, perspiration and hard work there's a chance we can save this paint or at least bring it back to category #3 which is "Good Condition". This car is scheduled to be showcased in an upcoming edition of HMN or Hemmings Motor News, so it's definitely worth giving it the old Autogeek try....

Below you'll find the "Before" pictures where I've thoroughly documented the current condition of the paint in but full bright overhead sun light as well as florescent lights.

The plan right now is to use Meguiar's M100 and/or M101 depending upon the tools and pads we use.

M100 is for wool pads on rotary buffers - We may start out using wool pads and rotary buffers or rotary buffers and foam pads in which in this case we'll use M101.

We'll do our second step using Flex 3401's

And probably top her off with Blackfire Black Wax

Please sign me up, Mike. I am looking forward to working on this black beauty. The "Hydra-Matic" emblem on the hood of this Oldsmobile really takes me back. See you on Thursday!

:whs: , this one would give the most impressive 50/50 shot? What about that work section taped on the hood, an island of perfection surrounded by all those swirls?

Impossible to imagine, what level would be possible to improve a paint like this? That's scarring. It's wait, and see.

Let's pray for the miracle!

Wish you all the best of lucky, and I'm looking forward to hear how M100 and M101 performed if used.

Kind Regards.

I bet Stuart Florida and surrounding areas have some of the best detailers anywhere. Good luck cant wait to see how it turns out.

Mike,

I would like to help in the resurrection of this classic. I have an affinity for these since I have the 41 caddy....

Chris

PS - If I wanted to order something can I pick it up tomorrow? Its #RT-60356. Zap window cloth - come to really like these. I would want 2 for $10. We could even use it for tomorrows job!

Thanks.

You're all on the list. Try to bring a buddy that you know is interested in learning how to detail cars... we're going to need some muscle for this project.

Very cool Chris....

I used to own a 1948 Plymouth and a 1949 Cadillac, so I too have an afinity for these older cars with this body style....

Sure, just place youre order over the Internet or better yet call one of the customer care staff and let them know you'll be joining us for the Thursday Night Project and they'll bring it out to the garage for you.

It stinks that I'm over 1,000 miles away, as I'd just love to work shoulder to shoulder with Mike and the other pros on a project like this.

BTW, I was too busy at work to comment yesterday, but as an Oldsmobile fan, I was happy to see the thread title edited!

Too bad we ran out of time last weekend. This would have been a great challenge.
