1967 VW Bug - Bringing the DEAD back to LIFE - Original Paint!

So I get this e-mail from a guy asking for help restoring the original paint on an old VW Bug, here's the e-mail

Mike,

I acquired an unrestored rust free original Southern California 1967 VW Bug in VW Blue color that has been covered and stored outside in California for 14 years. I want to do your Meguiar's #7 magic treatment to try to preserve the paint. The paint is very heavy oxidized with some primer showing on the front of the front fenders along with some small areas of light spotty rust where the paint was worn away as the car was towed behind a motor home at some time in it`s history.

I suspect the vehicle has had one prior VW Blue spray 20+ years ago.

My question is order of treatment and your overall thoughts. I do not know what to do first.

1. Should I do the restorative clay treatment first?

2. Should I use a 50/50 CLR/Water with a blue Scotch Brite pad on the rust first or something else on the rust?

3. Should I just start with a heavy #7 application and let it sit for 24 hours.

Thanks so much for even reading this call for help!

David

74 year old car nut but still going strong.

My recommendation was to skip claying and skip the 50/50 CLR/Water process and instead do this,

  1. Wash with Comet
  2. Apply HEAVY applications of #7
  3. Seal with Meguiar's M20 Polymer Sealant

Your recommended treatment Comet, #7 for 24 hrs, #20 was amazing.

All the videos made it possible. I could not believe the difference, I am a true believer for single stage treatment and now my son wants help with his classic!

David,

I'm totally impressed! You completely SAVED the paint on this classic Bug!

You should be very proud of yourself. Now just keep her up by re-applying the #7 followed by the #20 and each time she'll look better and better!

Nice work.
