Brand new paint job on an all original restoration of a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Here's a few pictures I took on Saturday.

More information to come...

I have an Advanced Paint Correction and Show Car Detailing Class coming up this month and this will be the car my students get to work on instead of a rental car, demo hood or cookie sheet. Which I've used all of these and they are very effective but there's no replacement for actually working on, training on and leanring on the real deal...

This advanced class is limited to 8 people and there are a few seats still availble.

More information will go up today...

What's the date and how do you sign up? Just curious since there is only a few sets left?

Looking forward to following its progress.

This is a one-owner car that was purchased locally and remained in the Stuart area all of it's life. My friend Paul Grosso was commissioned to restore it at his rod and restoration shop.

Paul is also a past student of mine at one of my Detailing Boot Camp Classes and we also did an extreme makeover to his personal resto-rod here,

Since attending my class and a number of our extreme makeovers I've become good friends with Paul and more importantly... earned his trust to "touch" his company's project cars.

This car originally came with a vinyl top and it will be getting a new vinyl top as it works through the restoration process. We will get the car without any of the glass, chrome or trim installed and that's the perfect way condition for a full-fledges, wetsand, cut and buff for show car results.

Stay tuned for more info...

Sweet, can't wait to see this! I had a 1970 442 and an 87 442. The 70 442 ran 10.80 at 124 and was featured in Hot Rod magazine. If I can find the link I will post it later.

***Update***

Going to do the first cut on the Cutlass tomorrow morning. Paul want to sand the paint flat to remove the orange peel and then spray 2-3 more coats of clear on the car before we use it for our advanced class on paint polishing techniques.

Going to put the Rupes RH156 Orbital Air Sander to the test...

Going to sand with #800 grit till all panels are flat. Should only take 3-4 hours.

What a great experience for Tyler.....I can imagine him talking about it in the future to his friends. Nothing beats practicle experience.

Here's a few pictures from Saturday...

I'm going to create a new thread for all the pictures as I'm going to take this topic a different directs.

Suffice to say... the Cutlass is ready to go back into the paint booth for 3-4 more coats of clear...

Here's the Cutlass with 2-3 coats of PPG clear that's about 6 months old..

Since Autogeek carries the complete Rupes line I decided to test out the Rupes Orbital Air Sander for this project. Most of you reading this will likely never need to sand down an entire car but if you are ever going to tackle this type of project you can do it by hand or machine.

I'm a machine guy...

That's a 3M 6" foam interface pad on the Rupes 6" backing plate to help the sanding discs conform to curves.

This is Orange Peel, this is how the entire car looked before I sanded it down...

WARNING
Anytime you're machine sanding with something as aggressive a 500 grit sanding discs... focus on the task at hand... also make sure there's plenty of paint on the car to sand before you start.

These discs are perforated for use with vacuum dust extraction. I didn't bring a vacuum with me so I used it without vacuum. The Rupes is outfitted for use with a vacuum and the 3M interface pad does have air passage holes.

Anytime you're dry sanding, especially by machine, be sure to wear the appropriate safety equipment...

With 500 grit sanding discs you can knock a panel with orange peel down to flat as a chalk board in no time flat...

More to come...

Coming up on February 23rd and 24th is an advanced paint correction and polishing class. This class is limited to only 8 people and it's half full.

Everyone that attends this class will get two full days of advanced sanding, compounding and polishing techniques including sanding and polishing this 1970 Cutlass.

Learning how to actually approach a project like this is the REAL DEAL. Working on rental car, cookie sheet pan or demo hood is all good but nothing trumps not only working on the real deal but a classic restoration like this 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass.

Get signed up fast because this is the only advanced class I have scheduled for the foreseeable future.

Mastering Paint Polishing - February 23rd & 24th

I've never seen this opportunity anywhere else, so if you want to learn how to hand sand, machine sand and then use multiple tools for paint correction and polishing, clear your schedule and get signed up.
