1975 Mercedes 450 SL Any suggestions?

I've had good luck with using M205 with chrome and aluminum trim..... NXT Polysh works good. But the M205 was the ticket after that.

JStupid question: Is using a coating on 40yr. old paint completely ok?

I see nothing wrong with it so long as it's compatible. IIRC coats are no recommended for single stage paints. I reserve the right to be wrong though. Personally, I'd probably use a traditional sealant and top it with a top quality nauba.

Dude you're making me have serious second thoughts now..
While I appreciate the information provided by SRConcepts earlier in this thread about what the paint might be... There's still a part of me that finds it extremely hard to believe that this 40yr. old original paint is not somehow single stage... While it's totally possible it's true about it being a special hybrid like he described, what are the odds? Extremely rare. Heck, even a 1988 Ferrari Testarossa came with single stage paint. And that's 13yrs. later, and it's a Ferrari! Lol.

I tried to search online but there's so much info my head nearly exploded. Lol. I almost felt like going to the Mercedes Benz dealership and putting them to the test... I wonder if anyone in the building is an absolute human almanac that knows just about every stupid fact there is to know about Mercedes Benz history/stupid things like this... If I worked at the Cadillac dealership, I'd be that guy. Lol.

I did some more research with people who know more than I, and found something interesting. It seems that on that generation of SLs, if it's a solid color it's single stage. If it's metallic (I believe that one is), it's a basecoat/clear coat system.

I've corrected three 1986 SLs now. Two of them (red / beige ) were single stage and the latest SL (maroon red) was clearcoated. Based on all my paint thickness readings and visual observations I can't see a respray on any. If you can take off the side moldings, they get in the way, easy to take off and will get better correction results. If you have any questions feel free to ask, I'll try to answer them best I can.
