Dear AGO Friends,

Today is the last day of 2014. Before moving on to 2015 I wish to share one of my latest jobs this year, entering the new year dressed in white, not yellowish!

To reach the white, I've relied on latest released Menzerna Compound Super Heavy Cut 300 (SHC300 / misspelled FG300 in some places).

Customer contacted me willing to improve his 1979 MP Lafer (a VW motor fitting a custom body produced earlier in Brazil, based on British Classics from the ~60s). From what I know they sold about 5000 units, however everyone that came to my garage while I was working on it knew / lived something about this car. I'll not enter in details since I'm no specialist in this subject.

After inspecting the car with customer I couldn't promise much but we agreed on a general improvement, overall.

Through the days, I took as much time walking around the car taking decisions as I've spent time working on it. In the end I believe I could offer a fair result to my customer, compliant to his expectations.

General Before / After view

First shot, when it arrived (bit blurred pic but looked fine at display!,) - tip: Take 2 or more pictures of everything!

You're now invited to follow bellow some details I was able to capture during the work. Most of time I'm alone here so it's one hand working and another shooting, but my objective is to share the details of detailing this car, not how good I'm at taking pictures with one hand (which I'm improving, but not quite). :xyxthumbs:

Approaching, and some details

Looking Closer, any metal part neither glass and paint was looking properly, but oxidized, scratched, stained and dirty.

Engine and Bay detailed, got a before shot but :hungry: ! Would I grab the camera or my Brushes and APC? No details in between, protected with Sonus Trim and Motor Kote.

Interior

Few interior pics, but it was thoroughly worked. Ask at will:

In-Between, a test spot. I'm relying on CG extreme leather cleaner at 1:7 with water, a leather brush and a clean MF towel to wipe residue. 360º change in looks (and overall car smell).

Exterior Work

I've worked both interior / exterior simultaneously along with metal polishing and related in a sequence I had to develop in order to accomplish the task in an even manner. The picture order will not correlate exactly to the order things occurred.

Also a lot of HAND POLISHING was involved in this work! :buffing::nomore:

Let's put some lighting over this paint . . . featuring every defect you may have heard about:

Here I recommend a Thread I've read uncountable times, and every time I learn something worth to situation. Although title says White, it's intended for any paint color. By Mike Phillips:
http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...ions/22982-lesson-white-paint-teaches-us.html

My first test spot in this case included a cleaner wax 1-step approach and although I was being able to clean oxidation (slowly, but still), everything else was being left there (practically zero scratch removal). Paint was showing itself hard, and oxidation was heavy.

I've stepped to a medium polish and white pad, then orange pad, with few improvement (more oxidation removal, little to no effect on swirls and scratches). That's when I grabbed SHC300.

Preparation

I've decided on a waterless / rinseless approach to wash this car:

This is the paint after 'Being Washed':

MP-32.png

Polishing Cone can be easily washed between wheels but MF apparel should be switched often.

During finishing stage of polish with a soft foam applicator:
MP-47.png

Metal was then erased and coated using Pinnacle Black Label Diamond Surface Coating
MP-48.png

I've used a suede towel for even and easy application (notice some circles of product sprayed, those are easy to spread on surface)
MP-49.png

Wipe, and buff to a gloss using a quality clean MF towel:

I then did plastX (Flex + 4" orange HT Pad) on all lenses without being too aggressive, just to clear them up a little bit.
MP-51.png

Overall after front view:
MP-52.png

Hinges were bad
MP-53.png

I've taped the area and did a light sanding to remove gross oxidization (don't know if this is the correct word! ;) )
MP-54.png

Then polished metal to a shine:
MP-55.png

This time I went nuts and polished behind rear license plate (it was removed for polishing).
After:
MP-56.png

It's a gross thing to do!, but definitively made it shine.

I've decided to use a very light (but still very effective) cleansing polish to work here, to remove the spots without messing with the piece.
MP-61.png

During, worked like a cleansing lotion, not a polish:
MP-62.png

Product is very concentrated and goes a long way, I could do the other side using the same drop at the CCS (cut borders) applicator
MP-63.png

What's a cleansing step without a protection step afterwards? I've relied on Pinnacle Black Label Glass Coating,
MP-64.png

Easy as spray on (a very light 1/4 spray press down or less)
MP-65.png

Wipe off using a clean, quality MF towel:

General, Before

After:
MP-69.png

To start I've decided to polish most of the car by hand using SHC300 and a Microfiber / Foam Applicator. This would allow me to get everything to a new standard - many, many spots couldn't be reached effectively with the polisher.

SHC300 was the fastest in removing oxidation even by hand, so I was stimulated to move on without bothering with elbow grease involved.

MP-70.png

Taking advantage of the elbow grease haul I did 'insides' where they existed, here are some

MP-75.png

The fact a compound is aggressive or Super Heavy Cut doesn't mean you have to go ALL-IN every time with it.

I've found a very interesting cut / finishing relationship with SHC300 and a white Hybrid polishing pad. That was the further I decided to go on this one.

For finishing I've grabbed both Hybrids in 5" and 6.5", FF3000 and SF4000. Just in case, SF4000 worked like a charm.

Personally the huge difference in white color was very noticeable however camera and lighting wasn't helping much in capturing the moment. I've added a bit of contrast to settings when taking the bellow picture to better show how gross it was:

Happy New Year!!

Dear Clarence, this thread took several hours of preparation and I must admit almost giving up before ending. Unimaginably, during Christmas time I received an energy boost from Friends here at AGO and this was a definitive incentive to get this thread done (and many to come!).

This thread can be dedicated to those, without knowing I was facing a hard time came with a very positive Attitude towards me, offering the peace of mind needed to keep moving on.

There are many things in life a MasterCard can solve for us. Likely, there are plenty others any amount of money won't ever buy, and this is what I'm talking about.

Cheers!

Very Very Nice Tato, Like Night & Day. :props:

I have to get my hand on Menz...

Thank you for posting. Whenever you go for Menzerna Polishes take a look at Smack's Technique thread
http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...rning-3401-menzerna-products-hybrid-pads.html

A game changer for sure. I also recommend you to keep browsing that thread and read Mike Phillips input (page #1) which adds a lot of assurance on the technique (IMO, sure). The whole thread worth be read.

SHC300, FG400, PF2500, SF4000 and SF4500 are good numbers to start searching which one will fit your needs. Feel free to ask if you want further help.

Excellent work as always Rafael! Your attention to details is amazing. Thanks for sharing the products and processes used.

Talking about Smack's technique - here you are, Smack in Person. I appreciate you taking your time to look at what you are helping me building since from scratch!

Keep in touch,

Thanks for comment.

Tatão, another amazing, thoroughly, job You are the best detailer I know of. My professor. Let's keep in touch, eh? My Menz 300 is on the way!

Dear, thank you for kind comment. We are here learning a new thing or two everyday, glad to see you around.

You'll be 'shocked' with SHC300, it's a home run from Menzerna.

Thank you everyone,

Kind Regards.
