1st Time Steam User; Tips, Techniques, and Warnings?

I too just bought a new Mculloch MC1385. Yesterday, I took everything out of the box and it's a nice little unit.....and that's what she said!.....my bad, sorry...

The Mculloch MC1385 is small, light weight and after I read through the instructions it seems pretty easy to use. Fill the reservoir with distilled water, switch the unit on, it takes a couple of minutes to come up to temp then use with a variety of nozzles included..

Remember to empty the tank after use for storing. I'm sure if you intend to use your Mculloch MC1385 steamer daily this isn't necessary....

I got the 1275 from harbor freight a few weeks ago. Now I wish I would of got the 1385! I think the extra power would be amazing on big bad stains. Still, I detail 5-6 days a week and I refuse to detail with out it now. Can't believe I've been detailing so long with out steam.

I have available Karcher SC 1010 to order, anyone have an opinion on it?

Thanks again.

Great tips guys, keep them coming if you have anymore, specifically regarding interiors! Thanks

I use my steamer 5x or more a week. Things I've found useful:

1. Don't underestimate the small brushes that attach to the steamer head. They are great for paneling near the carpets that get dirt deeply ingrained in them. They are also great for doors that have accumulated grime. This 50/50 was taken after using the small brush attachment with my McCulloch 1385:

2. Keep clear of plastics, or at least keep your distance. You can clean plastics, but just keep the steam further away. I keep about 6-8 inches away from most plastics so that the clean will be hot and loosen the dirt, but not so that you have that "flash point" of extreme heat that will discolor".

3. Make sure to pre treat on carpets when steaming. Steaming does a great job of cleaning carpets, but by itself it can come up lacking on certain types of stains. Grease based stains benefit greatly by pre treating with an APC or dedicated carpet detergent. Once the cleaner has been brushed in and allowed to dwell your triangle tool with a cotton terry towel should soak it right up.

4. Don't be afraid to go through a lot of towels. I've done interiors that have required a LOT of towels. A 48 pack of cotton terry towels at Sam's Club costs like $12. Go spend $50.

5. Make sure to vacuum thoroughly before the carpets/upholstery completely dries. Steam does a great job loosening dirty so make sure to capitalize on that loosing by vacuuming up before everything dries and hardens. The exception to this is if you are using a crystallizing encap type cleaner and you want it to dry.

Thanks for all the help guys! I ended up using it last night on a detail and I'm in love with it. It's a great tool to use and after reading everyone's tips I felt comfortable enough to use it and I have no complaints. It definitely helped achieve the results I was after. Thanks again guys!
