2 Month Old 2016 RAV4 Black Trim Staining Issues

​Less than 2 months ago I got a new 2016 RAV4. It's color is silver sky metallic and there is black trim around the entire lower body. Previously I had been using Klasse AOI and then applying Collinite 476s as a final coat. So I immediately did my car with these products. Now I was not careful about not getting the Collinite 476s on the trim. Several weeks ago I began noticing whitish stain on the black trim.

I have some 303 Aero and put it on the trim but the staining came back through. Finally I thoroughly cleaned the trim with Dawn and then IPO and the stains are mostly gone.

I am probably going to start treating the black trim with WETS.

But my real question is what polish and wax can I used to polish the car and not have to worry about getting it on all the black trim?

During this time period I had pretty much decided to swap the 476s for Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze, but I believe that will stain the trim.

I am considering Pinnacle Sovereign or Signature Series, but do I really want to start using $60/jar wax?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

How about the Souveran Liquid Wax, it's alittle cheaper?

You need to tape up your trim before polishing. Other than that, I haven't ever used a wax or sealant that has stained trim that's a quality product. For something that lasts long that includes Duragloss 105 (recommend using it with 601), Blackfire Wet Diamond, Meguiar's Ultimate Liquid or Paste Wax (much more like a very durable sealant), and others. That list includes products that don't cost much at all yet still look amazing amd have decent longevity. I've gotten 8 months out of the Duragloss 105/601 combo. I actually use Duragloss 105 to clean trim.

Also to keep in mind: any product you get will last you YEARS if you apply it correctly with a DA. I probably don't even use 1.5 oz covering an average size car. And I don't think you should bother buying a jar of Pinnacle either, it's not meant for a daily driver like a RAV4 where durability is your biggest concern.

If I had to recommend a product, I would choose getting Duragloss 105 and 601. Research it well here in the forums and you'll find it's a favorite. I mentioned I use it to clean trim, but I also love using it in glass as well. If you want something that still lasts a while and has greater cleaning ability then I would also suggest Duragloss 501.
 
Will Klasse AIO stain my black trim? If so is there an AIO that won't?

I find myself balking at the idea of taping up the trim. I have black trim 360 degrees around the lower perimeter of my car.

I watched a lot of Darren Priest videos and he doesn't seem to tape but use products which won't mar the finish of black trim.
 
The best advice you can receive has been given.......a line of tape (or two) on the junction of the paint and the black plastic below it. It's not difficult and will save you a world of hassle. There are products sold at most Auto/big box stores that will not stain trim but their durability is questionable. I can't name them here because they are not sold here.

You need a quality product for the paint, tape, and a separate quality product for the black plastic cladding for durability. By doing so you won't have to do it as often.
 
If this thread was about Nu Finish, it'd be getting ripped to shreds right about now.😁Lol.
 
Either tape or buy some carpro hydro 2 or Gyeon wet coat or ps21 wax which deosnt stain,or just don't wax to close to the trim.
 
Tape it off, better to prevent than fix later. It shouldn't take but 10 minutes at most to tape it off
 
I've used both those products and neither one have stained my trim. And I, like you, have trim 360 (Subaru Crosstrek). The key is to get it off as soon as it gets on the trim.
 
DavidAl I'm sorry but which two products were you referring to?
 
If its a sealant you want then try WG deep gloss poly sealant. The spray stuff is pretty durable also.

Sounds like a good plan. But I'd simply switch to products that are proven to NOT stain trim to avoid any worries all together. There are plenty to try, many of which will actually enhance/protect your trim at the same time.

I suppose someone will point out something better than MUQW. It must pass one hurdle. That is that it is user friendly to rubber, plastic and yes black trim! Darren Priest seems convinced that MUQW has special attributes which cause rubber and plastic to be preserved. I remember also a Range Rover which was maintained in much the same way as the Denali.
 
Upon doing a little more research I might switch the MUQW to OCW or Aquawax.
 
You should remember that Darren does this for a living. He has to be there every two weeks to service his clients. If that means working in the sun. He has to use a product that plays well in that environment. Since he's trying to make a profit, he's going to be more price conscious than weekenders. And, since he knows he's going to redo his work every two weeks, longevity isn't an issue, low impact and speed are.

I watched a video he posted where he compared D156 with BSD (Sonax Brilliant Shine Detailer). His conclusion was that he would continue to use D156. If you read the comments, you would see he was ripped pretty thoroughly for this.

The truth is they're both very good products. It just depends what your situation is and what you need out of the product. Both are very easy to apply.

I'm a big fan of BSD. It works for me. It can be used on everything. It just costs more and isn't very sun tolerant. The trade off is it lasts longer.
 
I want to thank everyone for their patience with a newbie/amateur like me. I am beginning to see the complexity of the subject. Using multiple products to care for one's car's surface, change one variable and everything changes.

This morning it occurred to me that whereas most persons experience with apply spray waxes was that they go on quickly - say in 7 to 15 minutes to do the whole car. But my experience of applying MUQW/D159 over a 9 week old coating of 476s was quite different. It took me most of an hour to apply the MUQW.

Now I had chosen 476s about 2 years ago when my plan was to wax my previous car say every 8 months and I was looking for longevity.

But now I realize 476s may not be the ideal base coating for a spray wax.

So what is an ideal base coat for spray waxes?? A wax such a Pinnacle Sovereign for example or a sealant such as WG high gloss sealant? Should one stick within a product line?

So, this just went out in emails (One month - wasn't the Pony express like a couple days ?).

I'll tell you what I would do. Others can offer theirs.

Base - I would use a sealant instead of a wax. Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant (WGDGPS)is good for longevity. The wipe on/walk away (WOWA) products like Opti-Seal, Blackfire Crystal Seal, and Wolfgang Deep Gloss Liquid Seal are popular because of ease of use/quickness. If you want to stay in the Meguiars product line, check out Ultimate Paste Wax. It's really a sealant that applies like a wax (Actually no wax in it, I think.). Like D156/Megs UQW, it can be applied in the sun, goes on everything (no staining) and is reasonably priced. I've used it a few times. It's a really nice product. I wouldn't expect to get 4+ months out of it though. But, if you keep D156 over it, it could last a long time.

Remember, the key to longevity is proper prep. Either polish before or use a paint cleaner. Heck, you have Klasse AIO. You can wash with that stuff. Put a cap full in a bucket of water. Put extra on whatever you're washing with as you go if the paint is dirty (as in film, not topical dirt). Dry as you go like a rinseless wash.

After that, use your D156/Megs UQW at least every 2 weeks. You should be in good shape.

I don't have any idea why it would take you an hour to apply D156. Try squirting each section lightly (One or two spray bottle squirts). Or get a Solo hand pump sprayer - finest mist I've found - and one swipe spray per panel. This would be done when your washing - as you dry (Drying aid, laying in the product). Shouldn't add more than 5-10 minutes to washing your car.
