While cleaning an engine I cover things like any open air filters, the top of the alternator and the ecm if it is located in the engine bay. While applying dressing, I usually cover the serpentine belt with aluminum foil. Is all that necessary? Not really sure but it puts my mind at ease, so I continue to do it.
