2005 Acura MDX

Co-worker wanted the headlights done and some basic paint correction work. Due to rain, I’ll do the interior another day.

When the car bra was taken off a horror revealed itself. The bra stained the paint a yellow tint especially noticeable on the hood. I was able to reduce, but NOT eliminate the yellow tint. Even after multiple passes with LC Orange, Tangerine HydroTech MF cutting pads using HD CUT and Wolgang Uber…the tint was too deep for my comfort to go any further.

The bra had been on appx 3yrs.

Other typical issues on a 10yr old truck…misc scratches, scuffs, paint transfer, etc..

Overall though, the paint was in decent shape for the age and a vehicle left out 24/7/365.

To my dismay the customer wanted to put the bra back on even after explaining it was damaging the paint. Huh? I figured she’d toss it so I didn’t even clean it. Well, she still wanted the bottom clip bra on, but I convinced her to leave the hood portion off. So, I cleaned it with 3D APC and hit it with ISP then CarPro Pearl. The thing STINKS. Oh, well. It’s her car and I guess she’s used to it with the bra on.

You did everything right and it turned out awesome.

Great job!! You turned that thing around. What did you use on the B pillars?

Thanks, guys. I hit the B Pillars very lightly with a well used orange pad and HD CUT. Speed 3/4. In retrospect, a white pad and HD ADAPT or even HD POLISH probably would have been enough. I was crunched for time with severe storms popping up all around me.

As it turned out, it didn't rain by me until after dark. I could have done the interior today. Oh, well.

This 50%+ chance of rain is a real hassle. I'm working on getting some shop space on a per diem basis before the start of Winter so I can keep going...

PS- I can't edit the post anymore to remove the pic showing the license plate.

:xyxthumbs:

Wow! Owners must have been shocked! Awesome work!

Actually, that's one of the disappointing things.

The owner had little to no reaction. I got far better response on facebook then from the owner. LOL.

When I give large discounts as I do for co-workers, the positive feedback means more to me than the money does.

Even when I did a walk around and pointed out defects removed there was literally no reaction at all.

Later on, she did text me saying I did a great job.

Some people are just more stoic than others I guess.

The pictures look great, it looks like a new car. I was going to ask about the pillars too.

I wouldn't stress about how people react to things, sometimes they are just in a rush or trading it in and don't care.

If the clear bra had UV protection in it, it might have preserved the color under it. Acura/Honda Premium White Pearl has a slight yellow tint to it while Crystal White Pearl does not.

Could that have possibly been it?

conman: No...I have a few better pics of the discoloration. But look at my 1st pic full size. You will see the discoloration. Above the driver side headlight, there are a few blotches that look very yellow in the right light.

In no way, shape or form does the defect resemble uniform factory paint. I understand what you're stating though where a bra protects the paint where over time the rest of the paint fades, etc...this is not the case.

People who wrap their cars with clear bra have their brain weight less than 1.4kg, much less indeed.
The paint is not protected in any way from stone chips or scratches (my friend's new pearl white BMW X4 some murderers scratched his both doors & because he got a clear bra all over so they did it very good, very deep), paint doesn't breathe, it's conserved & if after few years bra is removed paint looks sick, not new as some might expect. Also clear bra from environmental exposure gets yellow (same like headlights for example) think how black or white or any other paint will look if you apply over it yellowish plastic, ugly, right? Also sun likes to bake glue beneath it & this makes chemical reaction on cars clear coat, horrible stuff.
Companies who push such products in the market know it but they know too that fools never end.
The most stupid thing one can do to his/her car is to wrap it with clear bra. Porsche sometimes delivers cars with half hood clear bra, it must be removed immediately after Nürburgring spin.

You made a nice work here.

Car looks great and the lawn looks even better! You must have some water bill lol. Nice work.

awesome job. hope she takes a little better care of it from this point forward. you made it look great.

Great work. Vehicle looks incredible. That's all you used on the headlights was th DP product...no sanding?

Thx, guys. Scott- just rain water on the lawn and we have well water.

She had it cleaned a few weeks ago. They did an ok job on the wheel wells and jams (except the rear jam). But they didn't wash the roof at all. And clearly they didn't remove the bra when washing it. Wow. I also get the vibe that they just slapped some shiny stuff on the dash without really cleaning it.

I'll post the interior pics to this thread when I'm done...may be a few weeks until I can get to it.

Dave: Yep. No sanding. Just a very light polish needed. The 3 1/4 Inch Thin Foamed Wool Pads work great with the DP Polish. Literally 1 quick pass got me 95% clear. I then reverse direction on drill and do another pass. Bingo. All clear. Total polish time was under 5min per headlight. Took longer to tape up then polish.

I may have to give that a try.
