I understand why guys put tape on cars to polish them, on any auto especially with an older ride. I sure would skip any tape work on the paint. One never knows about paint work, if the painted surface was not prepared (sanded) properly. When you go to pull the tape off and the paint comes off with it. What would you tell the customer? I am just curious.

That has never happened to me on a correction job. If you're concerned with such a thing, place the adhesive side of the tape momentarily on your shirt or pants. It will pick up some lint, which will reduce the grip it has on the paint.

Putting tape on your pants or shirt is a good tip. The lint off your clothing does catch on to the tape and gives the tape less bite. I do not mind taping off trim. I will pass on putting tape directly on the paint work. We all do things differently. On a car that has a full multiple stage paint correction. I wash the car between the compounding and polishing steps. So loading up the drip rails with the spent product is not a big deal for me.
After the paint compounding and polishing is done. After the final wash I will clean out the drip rails, jambs etc. to remove all the spent products used. It is more work vice masking off the paint but not by much. Through the years I have only had a few cars that when the tape was removed from the paint the paint came off with the tape. We were fortunate enough that we were able to correct (spot paint) the car prior to delivering the car to the customer.
I know removing the tape from paint work with the paint coming off with it is a long shot but it happens. On the few occasions I had that happen. It was on a high end big buck collector ride. Nice correction work on that Jag. I did not mean to be a smart A.. I was just curious.
