2014 BMW X3 2.8 Opti Coat Detail

I'm about to jump from iPhone to DSLR. What camera and lenses do you use?

I'm 90% sure I'm going with the Canon D60 body, but not sure on which lenses for photographing cars.

I use an Olympus OM-D, the lens I use for full car pictures is a Panasonin 7-14mm UWA zoom.

I am sure you will be very happy with your camera, but if I were to go Nikon vs Canon, it would be Nikon - they have the best sensors period, right now. (those sensors are made by Sony)

Camera Sensor Ratings - DxOMark

PS: Make sure to invest some $$$$ into at least one very good lens.

Man, those shots are amazing. I need to dust off my DSLR. It's too easy to fall into the habit of using a phone camera...

Thanks I'll have to look into it. I still haven't physically put my hands on anything expect the Canon 7d. I'm also going to use the camera for video and it's hard to beat the 60d in that department.

Do you have any lens recommendations? I'm looking to start with two. I figure a macro lens (or one that will zoom for defects and to get all the details) and one for car portrait type shots like you have posted.

Thanks - there is 2.0. but that is not what I use. I use the pro version. 2.0 is the consumer version.

Is Opti Coat 2.8 the same as Opti Coat Pro? If so, what happen to Opti Coat 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6 and 2.7?

This might be the most paint pop I've seen in any show-n-shine--well done!

Ron, it looks fantastic!! (You might want to consider CQF if you haven't already, especially with the latest price gouging from Opt, I am considering dropping OG and only offering CQF or CQUK, but that's for another discussion). I just got a new Nikon D7100 and I haven't tried shooting RAW yet. I should do that. I'm too damned lazy to even use a tripod most of the time, LOL. Your shots are an accurate reflection (pun intended) of the great work you do.

I am not the one to be asked about APS-C cameras/lenses. Sorry. I know a bit about FF (Full Frame) ones though, but that is not what you are looking for. What is your budget?

Now I get your question. Sorry, if I mislead you. 2.8 stands for the the Model of the SUV, not a version of the OC. OC pro has only one version.

I love that you call me Ron! (Thomas)

I offer both OC and Finest. The 7100 is claimed to be the best APS-C camera. Remember that raw means you will need to make adjustments to the picture. Processing is either done by the camera or by you after the shot is taken in a program.

Here is an example for you

left is raw, right is adjusted to what I saw in person.

Awesome work on that BSM X Series.

Years ago "2.8" or BMW "328" meant something. The "3" was the series, the "28" meant 2.8L engine. Same thing with 330i, 525i, etc... The "i" stood for inline (inline 6 cylinder engine).

Now the naming like "2.8" doesn't mean much. BMW dropped the 2.8L engine, and I believe the 2.5L as well in NA. But, they still use the system to designate the higher the number, the higher the performance. I think they still make the 325, but it comes with the new 4cyl engine.

Thanks! It is a 4 cylinder turbo, with very good gas mileage. Power equals what the old 2,6 I6 would have, hence the 2.8. At least that is what I read.

Your camera is as high quality as the job you put into this car! excellent work!

You may want to consider getting a Canon EOS M. Ebay has a $400 deal that comes with 18-55mm and a 22mm lens. Based on the DXO link, the sensor is only 1 tick lower than the 7d.

No Viewfinder though.

Thanks for your kind comment BTW

$900-1000.

Canon 60D - $700

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II SLR Lens - $95 used from amazon.

I will probably 64gb memory card. Also need a tripod and maybe a remote for taking photos while I'm working.

I really like the 60D for the video functionality as well.

Any thoughts?

I am sure that you will be very happy with that combo. However, you will want better glass down the road. It is all about the lens. Make sure to post pictures with it.

Awesome, thanks for all the help I appreciate it.

It will be a huge step up from my iphone lol. Then later down the road with a nicer lens, it will be another step in the right direction.

Thanks again.
