Hello All

I am very new to the detailing world and I'm here to learn.

I ride a '17 HD Street Glide and it has a really great paint scheme. The colors are called Arctic Black and Deep Slate Candy....both have a lot of metallic flake and pictures don't do it justice.

I'll learn to take better pics.

The paint is still in great shape, but I've ridden about 40k miles in the last two years. I do a lot of the maintenance myself and I know the bike from tip to stern and and I can point out every imperfection. I'm here to learn how to better care for the paint and see what can be done about some nicks, scratches and swirls.

Doing a lot of reading and asking questions at this point. Really looking forward to bringing out the best in my bike's finish.

As for swirls and scratches, just follow whatever recommendations and processes discussed on this forum that make the most sense to you. There's enough information that's for sure. And there is more than one way to skin a cat that's why I say do what makes sense to you.

Swirls are easy to take care of. Scratches and chips/nicks can be another story.

For scratches the first thing you need to do is make an assessment of whether or not the scratch can be removed without breaking through the clear-coat. This is really a judgement call and your own experience plays a big part in making that call. Sometimes it's best to just do your routine polishing and live with whatever of the scratch remains. Only you can make that choice. One thing in your favor with Harley paint is that the clear-coat is much thicker than your typical car.

i have a bunch of contraptions and potions on the way.....got an old '08 GMC Sierra that I'm not as emotionally attached to that I can practice on to get feel for how it goes....then after that I have my wife's 300....then my son's jeep....lot's of practice opportunities before I start on my bike

thank you my friend, best way to a biker's good side is pay a compliment to his bike....I love it....waited too long to finally buy it

i'll be honest, sometimes I just go out in the garage and just look at it :D
 
thank you mike, I've learned a ton here.....found alternatives on other sites....but there was no way I was going to ditch you guys after all y'all have done to help me get my bearings...Im still pretty green, but when you're green you're growing, when you're ripe, you're rotting :)

just put in an order in for a bunch of toys and potions from you guys

I see you opted for the G8 Polisher. You'll be happy with that choice for your bike. It's much more suited for that task than the G9.

For the cars you mention (in post #7), while the G8 will certainly work, the G9 would be a better fit there. It will just take longer with the G8 because of its smaller size.
 
yup, I was thinking about the batwing fairing with the contours and curves, you confirmed what I was feeling....the G8 seems like it's perfect for a motorcycle....the broadest surface I'll have to wheel out is going to be the side of a saddle bag or parts of the tour pack....thanks for the suggestion my friend
