3" Pad Solution for PC 7424

Another option would be to use the D.A. adapter and purchase smaller backing plates e.g. 1-2" backing plates from Flex along with the corresponding smaller Flex pads. I also purchased the rotary backing plate extension

The black 3" Meguiar's plate is an excellent option. I regularly us it when I'm using my Lake Country Hydrotech pads.

If you want machine to work perfect with 3inch BP and pads, You should consider getting a lighter counterweight, that will make the machine work with no vibrations at all !

Counterweight for Porter Cable 7424XP Polisher

You can buy one at Autogeek and just make it lighter by grinding it carefully. Cheers !

In using a 3" backing plate, is it advisable to use a shaft extension ?
And if so where can you find a shaft extension that is 1/4" ?
I have searched and cannot locate ????

NEVER MIND....I figured it out :-)

I've read that changing the counterweight isn't necessary when polishing, only when using the PC as a sander.

Does that change with a 3" backing plate?

weight

I would also like an opinion on that. I bought an extra counter weight but haven't shaved it down and would like to know just how much weight should be taken off ???

i've used an adapter with extension shaft on the pc in the past and did not feel comfortable using it as it came loose during use. use with caution!

Do not have a PC with me here in Europe so just take a drill and drill at least two big holes in counterweight, so you wont have to shave it, it will make it lighter and thus less vibrations will be present.

But if you want you can take a weight of standart BP and the 3inch one and see the weight difference so you know aproximately how much the counterweight must be lighter

Just to chime in for everyone that will read this thread into the future....

If you want to burn and turn smaller pads on a Porter Cable, Griot's Garage or even a Meguiar's MT300 then get the new heavy duty 3" backing plate from Griot's Garage.

The above tools are all the same "type" of tool in that they are,

Free spinning
8mm orbit stroke length or OSL
Use a 5/16" threaded spindle

Here's the link to my review of the new Griot's Garage heavy duty 3" backing plate

And here's the link to the thread with the video we made with Jeff Brown at SEMA 2016 and in this video Jeff explains IN DETAIL what makes this backing plate so special for use with full size orbital dual action polishers like the PC, the Griot's 6" DA or the Megs MT300

From the description of the new 3" Griot's backing plate, "Griots Garage 3 inch HD Backing Plate can be used with the Griots Garage 3 inch and 6 inch Polishers for precision detailing in small areas!"

If I remember correctly from having one, the threads are way smaller on the GG3. Also, like Mike said, too meaty for the 3". I didn't think the GG3 had enough oomph. I sold it and got a Bigfoot Mini.

I do have 2 GG6's. One of them will be getting this new backing plate

If folks don't mind, I'll add a little about the PC Guard.

All it is, is a length of peel and stick neoprene type rubber weatherstrip. While I don't believe you will find the exact same material at any big box home improvement stores, I'm sure some specialty places may carry such, and am sure you could find such at places like McMaster-Carr.

Mine never stayed stuck very long, the ends began to lift even though I fully degreased the Shroud with 91% IPA prior to installation.

Thus I had to again come behind a day later with a couple drops of Crazy Glue to re-affix.

Try this too. Mousepad from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006HTZ0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 $4.95 free ship. Clean rubber side with IPA and LET DRY. 1/2" 3M emblem tape, top and bottom of spindle. I added contact cement in the middle, but I always overkill.
