3" Polisher or 4" Pad Setup

I'm thinking of picking up the GG3" polisher but I have a GG6" and a PC 7336. I thought about getting a 4" pad setup for the PC and dedicating it for tight areas but it would be 1" bigger than the GG setup.

Is the 1" wider pads really gonna make a big difference getting in to tighter areas?

Opinions?
 
Remember you can also add a 3" bp and pad set-up to the GC6" or PC 7336 besides the 4" set-up. Sometimes it is not the size of the bp and pad that hinders getting into tight spots , but the physical size of the machine. Just something to ponder.
 
I just got a 3" BP for my DA, and I have yet to come upon a situation where I wished I had the GG3".

First of all, sexy car the Pierce-Arrow.

And yeah, if I had to do the rear of one of those bad boys id probably want a GG3" too.
 
I think I'll just hold off on the 3" for now and go with a backing plate and pads....since I don't have a Pierce-Arrow right now ;-)
 
I agree with Mike Phillips, though. The PC with a 3" BP and pads gets a bit wobbly. Not too much to handle, but it gets tiresome in a hurry. I figured I could get away with just using them. But I'll be darned if I am not just sick of having to go around mirrors and spoilers by hand because the PC is simply too large. I caved and ordered the GG3 during Day 2's Griots specials.

Handy for spreading wax/sealants over a long-reach area... truck roofs, etc.... one-handed. About the only thing a 4" pad is good for on 'em. Also get places on bikes you'd never get near with a larger polisher. YMMV.

Well, i'm planning to get a 3" BP along with its pads for my GG6. Is it better to get the BP and the pads OR should i get the GG3?
I dont want to overspend by getting a new GG3 , i mean, if i can stick the 3" BP to my GG6, why would i need a new machine to do the same job.
 
I use 4" pads with machine, 3" pads by hand.
some wax pots' opening is too small to put the yellow wax applicator inside so I put the 3" pad inside. (Nattys)

:iagree: My 3" backing plate hasen't failed me yet. But I still want a GG3" polisher. Who can say no to more power tools, especially DETAILING power tool :)
 
are there any backing plates out to better fit the 4" LC pads? I have the bp that came with the spot buffs kit but it's only 2 3/4". Can't apply any pressure without sinking the BP into the pad.

If you are using DA, how about these:
3.5" Dual Action Flexible Backing Plate- porter cable 7424XP hook and loop backing plate 3.5 inch.
Meguiars Unigrit 3 Inch Professional Backing Plate and Adaptor Kit, backing plate with adapters, meguiars backup pad

Avoid 3M backing plate because the hook and loop position are reversed so they cant be used with other brand pads.
 
I have the 3 in and 6 in GG DA's and the plates to make the 6 into a 3 woith BP. There is no comaparison in using the 6in coverted to a 3 vs the real 3 inch DA....The real advantage of the 3 in GG is you can one hand it for long periods of time and still do good work. Perfect when you are crawling around the underside or grill or on a boat....I really need both units...

Does the 3" GG produce a better result compared to the 3"plate on GG6"? What are the disadvantages of using 3" plate on GG6"?

In a word - No.

The 3 in GG is way under powered. You will get a "better" result more quickly with the 6 in polisher and small pad. The major disadvantages of that setup are the size and weight of the machine and the balance of using a large polisher with a small pad.

I have all the above. GG 6 in polisher with 6 in, 5 in, 4 in and 3 in pads. Honestly, I usually have my old PC setup for 3 or 4 in pads and my GG with 5.5 in pads. I also own the 3 in. I find myself reaching for the PC with 3 or 4 in pads far more often than the GG 3in.

The 3in is usable for very small tight jobs and for headlights. I have used it to wetsand headlights, but, not paint yet. I just bought a project car and plan to use it to learn to wetsand. I will try it in the next few months.
